No. 47 Tennis Hosts Pair Of Matches This Weekend

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado tennis team hosts a pair of opponents this weekend at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House beginning with Big 12 Conference foe Iowa State, Saturday, Feb. 24 and Northern Colorado, Sunday, Feb. 25.

Both matches start at 11 a.m. with admission and parking free.

The Buffaloes (4-2, 1-0 Big 12) are hoping to begin the conference schedule with a 2-0 record, a feat they have not accomplished since the 2001 season, in addition, matching the 2005 campaign after the first eight matches with a 6-2 mark.

CU has had much success against Iowa State and Northern Colorado in their head-to-head match ups with the Buffaloes holding 25-2 advantages against both schools. The Buffs have won sixth in a row against the Cyclones and 12 straight with Northern Colorado.

The Cyclones are 3-2 and 0-1 in the conference, while the Bears are 2-5 overall.

CU is nationally ranked at No. 47 in the Fila/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Poll and one of eight conference schools ranked in the top-75 poll.

In the individual national rankings, CU boasts the No. 42 doubles team with freshman Camila Belassi and junior Gleisy Torres Torres. The tandem is 5-1 at No. 1 doubles this season.

 

 

Match Notes

- The Buffaloes have played four nationally ranked schools, winning twice.

 

- The CU women have won the doubles point five of six times.

 

- Gleisy Torres Torres has won a team-high 14 matches (3 losses) for the year, 5-1 this dual season;

Monica Milewski is 13-5 overall, 4-2 this spring; Franziska Jendrian is 11-4 and 4-2 in the dual season.

 

- In dual singles play, freshmen Camila Belassi and Melisa Esposito each have four victories; junior Veera Nurmi is 9-5 overall with three wins in the spring. Nurmi holds the most wins on the team with 51 career singles triumphs.

 

- Head Coach Nicole Kenneally ranks second in school history with 79 career wins.

 

- Up next: CU travels to No. 35 BYU (March 2) and hosts No. 13 Baylor (March 4).
