BOULDER ? University of Colorado sophomore Jenny Barringer has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year. Brent Vaughn and Erik Heinonen were also named to the All-Academic Men’s Team.

 

Barringer is a political science major at CU. She earned a 3.573 GPA in the fall term. Barringer placed second at the regional meet and was the NCAA runner-up in Terre Haute, Ind. Barringer was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in the fall. Earlier this season she was also named a 2006-07 Cross Country Honda Sports Award Nominee.

 

Vaughn, an applied math major at Colorado, earned a 3.10 GPA during the fall. Vaughn finished ninth at the Mountain Regions and led CU with a 12th-place finish at nationals, helping the Buffs to their third national title in six years. Vaughn was also on the 2004 national championship team and led CU with a fourth-place finish that season.

 

Heinonen, who graduated with a double-major in news-editorial and anthropology, earned a 4.0 for the fourth time at CU. He placed 15th at regionals and was 28th at nationals, earning his first all-region and All-American honors and was a member of the national championship team. Heinonen was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in the fall.

 

To earn the honor, individuals have to have a grade point average of 3.25 and also place in the top 15 or top 10 percent of the NCAA regional meet.
