FORT COLLINS, Colo. ? Zach Hazen recorded a throw of 200-06 and battled snowy conditions to set the CU outdoor hammer throw record at the Tom Benich Invite hammer throw competition, held in Fort Collins, Colo. He surpassed the previous record by more than three feet. The old record of 196-09 was set by Jeff Singleton at the Colorado Open in 1997.

“The throw today felt really good,” Hazen said. “I was just really proud to get the CU record finally and hopefully it’s kind of a mark for (CU throws coach) Casey (Malone) and for field events in general at CU that new and exciting things are happening outside our awesome distance program. It was a really great day.”

Hazen, a senior, now owns the indoor 35 lb. weight throw school record (63-09.50) and the outdoor record. His previous personal record in the outdoor hammer throw was 193-04 and ranked third overall prior to this throw.

The mark was another regional qualifying mark for Hazen, his second of the season. He also earned a regional mark of 192-03 at the Potts Invitational. The throw is the third best mark in the Big 12 this season, fourth in the region and 20th overall in the nation.

Ryan Willis took 10th in the hammer throw. He earned a toss of 171-01. Chase Dukes was 13th overall with a personal record of 153-11.

On the women’s side, Kaitlin Kark took eighth. She recorded a mark of 139-06.

All other events in the Tom Benich Invite will be contested tomorrow in Greeley, Colo.
