BOULDER ? University of Colorado tennis student-athlete Gleisy Torres Torres was awarded the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, announced Monday.

Of the eight tennis regions nationally, Torres Torres was the central award recipient.

According to the ITA, the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship is awarded to a collegiate women’s tennis player who displays dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team’s performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis.

Regional award winners are finalists for the national awards that will be announced May 22 in Athens, Ga.

Torres Torres, a junior from Barquisimeto, Venezuela is the second CU student-athlete to be named the Cissie Leary Award winner from the Central Region; Kendra Strandemo was named in 2004-05.

Torres Torres, a three-year letterwinner, helped the Buffaloes earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament Field-of 64 this spring, in addition win 16 matches and finish tied for third place in the Big 12 Conference with a 9-2 record.

On the court, Torres Torres was tied for team honors in singles victories (25), was tied for second in dual wins (16) and won 13 spring matches at the No. 5 position.

For her career, she ranks 21st all-time on the school’s victories list with 55.
