BOULDER ? Qwest, FSN Rocky Mountain and the University of Colorado have named Shadow Ridge Middle School (Thornton, Colo.) seventh grader Evelyn Torres as the recipient of the seventh Winning Attitude award for the 2008 season.  Winners are selected from stories they submitted explaining how their “Winning Attitude” made a difference in their communities.

Torres showed her Winning Attitude by selling lollipops around her neighborhood to buy teddy bears for foster children.  She got the idea after having a discussion with a friend about what happens to children without parents.  Having felt sad that these children do not have family to spend holidays with, Torres decided to sell lollipops that her and her friends were always eating.  She admitted the business started off slowly, but after word got out where the proceeds were going to, Torres was able to raise enough money to purchase a large amount of teddy bears for foster children.

Torres and her classmates will be honored at halftime of the Colorado vs. Colorado State basketball game Wed., Dec. 10.  The game airs live on FSN Rocky Mountain beginning at 8:00 p.m.

This is the third year Qwest, FSN and CU have come together to honor middle school students around Colorado for the differences they can make in their communities by providing outstanding efforts in sportsmanship, community involvement and teamwork.  Torres is the first winner selected for the 2008-09 CU men’s basketball season, after six middle school students earned the award during the CU football season.  It is first time the Winning Attitude program has extended into the basketball season.
