Tennis Hosts Kansas State, Sunday

BOULDER ? Fresh off their upset over No. 55 Kansas on Friday, the University of Colorado tennis team will look for its fifth straight win Sunday morning against the Kansas State Wildcats at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House. First serve begins with the doubles competition at 11 a.m.

The Buffaloes (5-6, 2-0 Big 12) have also won their last three matches by 7-0 decisions, a school-first since the 1989-90 season. Kansas State (5-5, 1-1) ended a five-match losing streak on Friday defeating Missouri, 5-2. It was K-State’s first win at Missouri since the 2003 season.

CU leads the all-time series, 18-10 over the Wildcats, including three of the last four. The Buffs have matched last year’s 2-0 start in conference play. The last time they began the Big 12 season at 3-0 was last year and in the 12-year history of the conference, CU has won its first three matches only once.

Admission and parking to all home tennis matches is free and open to the public. Each home match the CU Sports Information Office will feature a tennis player with a series of 21 questions. Sunday’s featured student-athlete is junior Monica Milewski from Park Ridge, Ill.

ROLLING ALONG: CU has won four straight matches, their second longest winning streak in the last two years. Last season at this time, the Buffs engineered a four-match winning streak defeating four nationally ranked schools (No. 12 William & Mary, No. 14 Baylor, No. 43 Okla. State, No. 68 Missouri). Last year’s team won six matches in a row equaling the 1999-2000 team.

DOUBLES PLAY: Melisa Esposito and Franziska Jendrian have won seven straight, while Gleisy Torres Torres and Abbie Probert have kept their momentum intact, winning their five consecutive matches, and six of their last seven in dual play.

CHART CLIMBERS: Seniors Gleisy Torres Torres (four straight wins) and Veera Nurmi (five in a row) continue to move up the school’s all-time wins list. Torres Torres has won 67 matches tying for 16th place overall, while Nurmi has 66th (18th overall). Juniors Franziska Jendrian and Monica Milewski each have won 52, tying for 24th overall.

UP NEXT: CU takes to the road for three straight beginning with LSU (March 26), their first meeting with the Lady Tigers since 1987.
