Haverty Wins Heptathlon

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ? University of Colorado combined events athletes kicked off their outdoor season with a successful outing at the Cal State Northridge Spring Break Open on March 20-21.

Chelsea Haverty won the ?B’ section of the women’s heptathlon with 4,479 points. It was the first heptathlon in her career. She defeated Shianne Smith of Cal State L.A. by 182 points (4,297). Teammate Troi Smith placed third with 4,136 points. Eight of the 10 athletes who stated the meet finished.

Haverty won three events, the high jump, javelin and 800-meter run. She recorded a jump of 5 feet 1 ? inches to lead the field and won the javelin with a toss of 98 feet and 11 inches. The 800 was the final event in the two-day competition and she won in 2:24.99.

Smith’s top two events were the 100-meter hurdles and the shot put. She raced to a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (15.66) and recorded a throw of 35-03.75 in the shot put.

Adam Salzmann started the decathlon but was unable to finish the competition due to injury after the third completed event. He was eighth in the 100-meter dash (11.48), long jump (20-07.25) and was 12^th in the shot put (34-05.00).

CU assistant coaches Lindsey Malone and Heather Sterlin-Biglow competed in the ?A’ section of the women’s heptathlon. Biglow was third overall with 5,353 points and Malone placed sixth (4,475).

The Buffs next action is Saturday, March 29 at the Rob Upton Invite in Fort Collins, Colo.
