GREENSBORO, Ga. (April 25, 2008) ? The University of Colorado will be represented for the first time ever in the Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater at Reynolds Plantation, and two of the most prominent names in school history will team up on the golf course to represent the Buffaloes.

Former head coach Bill McCartney, the school’s all-time winningest football coach, and former quarterback Kordell Stewart, the school’s (and old Big 8 Conference’s) all-time total offense leader, will comprise CU’s two-man team in the event, which features coach and celebrity duos from 14 university teams from around the country.

The first place prize is a $100,000 scholarship check for their alma mater.  The Chick-fil-A Bowl Alma Mater at Reynolds Plantation will be played this Tuesday, April 29, and will feature a scramble format with an overall $375,000 scholarship purse.

McCartney and Stewart are paired in their foursome with South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier and former Gamecock Sterling Sharpe.  They are in the third group; in the second group "hitting into them" on occasion is former CU head coach Rick Neuheisel, who McCartney hired at CU in 1994 and who also coached Stewart.

McCartney coached Colorado for 13 seasons from 1982-1994 with a record of 93-55-5, leading the Buffaloes to three Big 8 conference titles (1989, 1990, 1991) and the consensus 1990 National Championship.  He was the Big 8 Coach of the Year three times (1985, 1989, 1990) and the National Coach of the Year in 1989.

Stewart, of course, threw the legendary 64-yard ?Hail Mary’ pass to Michael Westbrook to beat Michigan in Ann Arbor, 27-26, on Sept. 24, 1994.  Stewart later led the Pittsburgh Steelers to the 1997 and 2001 AFC Championship Games ? and was elected to the Pro Bowl and named Steelers’ MVP that same year.

McCartney is your basic bogey golfer but hits it straight down the middle for the most part, while Stewart, who only took up the game in the last decade, regularly bombs drives upwards of 350 yards.

The unparalleled field will also include defending champions Frank Beamer and Dell Curry of Virginia Tech and other top NCAA head coaches and celebrities.  Here is the field for the event:
