BOULDER ?  University of Colorado track and field athletes Jenny Barringer and Brent Vaughn were named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII University Division Men’s and Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country First Team as selected by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

This is the first time Barringer and Vaughn have been named to the team.

Barringer, a junior from Oviedo, Fla., ran to her second straight NCAA Cross Country Championship runner-up finish. She finished a time of 19:47.8. Barringer never finished below second place during the cross country season. She ran all four of her races under 20 minutes. Barringer ran a season best 19:29.30       at the Big 12 Championship when she earned her third consecutive runner-up finish.

Barringer did not compete during the indoor season, but she came out strong in the outdoor season. A runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the conference championship, Barringer went on to win her third NCAA Midwest Region title in the event in a time of 9 minutes, 44.46 seconds. Barringer recorded eight of CU’s 10 points at the conference championship. Her regional mark (9:44.46) is the top collegiate time heading into nationals.

In the classroom, Barringer has maintained a 3.67 grade point average. She is majoring in political science and economics. Barringer has been a six-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and is a two-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country and Track & Field first teams.

Vaughn, a senior from Aurora, Colo., earned his first collegiate cross country title at the Rocky Mountain Shootout. He went on to win the Big 12 men’s individual title one month later and became the first Buff since 2003 to win the individual title. Vaughn led CU at the national championship in November and placed 12th overall. He was the highest placing Big 12 runner in the race.

During the outdoor season, Vaughn continued his dominance in the 5,000-meter run. He smashed the school record by almost six seconds when he ran a mark of 13:18.48 at the Cardinal Invite. He placed second overall, losing only to Nike’s Bernard Lagat by two seconds. At the time, it was the fourth fastest time in the world. The mark is now the 24th best in the world, second best in the U.S. and the top mark in the NCAA.

Vaughn won his third Big 12 5k title as he helped the Buffs win their first outdoor conference title since 1947. Vaughn then went on to capture his third NCAA Midwest Region title and broke his out regional record with a time of 13:54.70 last Saturday.

The applied math/engineering major graduated this May with a GPA of 3.31. He was a four-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field First Teams and a three-time member on the cross country team. Vaughn has been a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll every semester while at CU.
