Tennis Hosts LSU Saturday
BOULDER ? The University of Colorado tennis team will open the home 2009 spring schedule against the No. 26 ranked Louisiana State Lady Tigers, Saturday, 10 a.m. at the Millennium Harvest House Bubble.
Colorado, ranked No. 57 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) enters the match at 1-0 on the young season after defeating Air Force, 5-2 on Tuesday. LSU will be opening the season in Boulder, then travel to the University of New Mexico for a Jan. 19 match.
Today’s matinee is a home-and-match meeting between the two schools after LSU edged CU last March in Baton Rouge, 4-3. Overall, LSU leads 2-0 in the series with the first meeting occurring back in 1987.
LSU features the fifth ranked singles play in the country, Megan Falcon. Falcon enters her senior year as the defending NCAA singles champion. Falcon joins fellow senior Mykala Hedberg as the country’s No. 17 ranked doubles team.
CU will counter with senior Monica Milewski, who is ranked No. 110 nationally.
At every home match throughout the home spring season, the CU sports information office will feature a student-athlete Q&A. Today’s feature is freshman Michala Hedelund Jensen. Hedelund Jensen is an open option major from Frederiksberg, Denmark.
Parking and admission are free at the Millennium Harvest House. First serve begins at 10 a.m. with the doubles competition, followed by singles play.
Match Notes
Last TIME vs.THE TIGERS... CU picked up the doubles point in last year’s meeting against LSU. It was one of 14 times the Buffaloes earned the doubles point. In singles against LSU last season, Melisa Esposito and Franziska Jendrian each won in straight sets.
RANKINGS... CU senior Monica Milewski is ranked No. 110 nationally by the ITA. In the Central Region, Milewski is eighth, followed by junior Melisa Esposito at No. 19, and senior Franziska Jendrian at No. 25. In doubles, among the top-15 Central Region tandems, Milewski and junior Camila Belassi are No. 12.
chart climbers... Franziska Jendrian won her 75th career singles match at Air Force on Tuesday moving into a tie for ninth on the all-time CU singles list. In doubles, she tallied her 66th win moving into a second place tie with Jessica Vanderdys (2003-06) and Sandra Fischer (1996-99). She trails Jessica Garrow (1996-99) by three matches (69) for the top spot.
AWAY FROM HOME... The CU women will only have two home matches in the first two months (Jan. & Feb.) of the spring season. After today’s matinee with LSU, the Buffs will host Boise State on Valentine’s Day (10 a.m.). CU opens conference play hosting Oklahoma, March 13.
YOUTH ON ROSTER... CU has four freshmen on the 2009 roster matching the 2004-05 season for the number of newcomers at the beginning of the season.
LSU Notes
? Falcon finished 13-4, including a 5-4 mark against ranked opponents, in fall tournament play capturing the Gopher Invitational singles title in September and ended the fall by winning the consolation title at the ITA National Indoor Championships.
? Senior Mykala Hedberg checked in at No. 17 in the national doubles rankings after completing the fall with a 12-3 record with Falcon.
In the Southwest Regional rankings, Falcon was listed at No. 2 in singles, Hedberg came in at No. 21 while junior Nicole Kantor was No. 25 and freshman Whitney Wolf was No. 30.
? Two pairs of Lady Tigers were listed in the doubles regional rankings as Falcon and Hedberg topped the list at No. 1 while Kantor and Wolf checked in at No. 13.-
