Brown and McLaughlin Are Named CU Athletes of Week

BOULDERGÇöFootball cornerback ChaGÇÖpelle Brown (senior), and freshman cross country standout Allie McLaughlin earned CU athlete of the week honors for the week of November 23-29. This is the third career honor for Brown and the first of this year and the first career honor for McLaughlin.
Brown, a LaPuente, Calif. (Los Altos) native, finished his CU career in style, racking up 11 tackles (9 solo) in last FridayGÇÖs 28-20 loss to Nebraska. Brown also had two tackles for losses including a quarterback sack, three third down stops and a tackle for no gain. He was in on the first three tackles of the game, and finished the season with 96 tackles, which was the most on the team, while playing all 804 defensive snaps from scrimmage. He also led the team in third down stops (12) and tackles for no gain (10). He had a team best 19 tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage to go with his nine tackles for losses, which included four sacks, both the second highest totals on the team. He finished his career with 257 career tackles, 26th all-time at CU, but seventh all-time among defensive backs. On Sunday he became the third defender in a row to claim CUGÇÖs MVP award, joining safety Ryan Walters last year and Jordon Dizon, who won in 2007. Brown also won the coveted Buffalo Heart Award.
McLaughlin, a Colorado Springs, Colo. (Air Academy) native, ran to a fifth-place finish and her first All-American honor to lead the Buffs to a 20th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. She was in the lead pack for most of the race and was the highest placing freshman in the country. McLaughlin crossed the finish line in 20 minutes and 1.1 seconds (20:01.1).

MenGÇÖs Basketball: Cory Higgins, Junior, Danville, Calif. Higgins averaged 17.7 points and 4.7 rebounds in three games at the EA Sports Maui Invitational helping the CU menGÇÖs basketball team win one game and narrowly winning two more. He also made 11-of-12 free throws during those games, scored 28 points in CUGÇÖs four point overtime loss to Arizona, 91-87, and added another 19 points in a four point loss to Gonzaga, 76-72. Both were team highs. Against Chaminade, Higgins chipped-in six second half points and four assists en route to a 73-58 victory. Over the three days, Higgins led the team in field goals made (19), tied for the team lead in three-pointers made (four), and finished second in rebounding (14).
Cross Country: Christian Thompson, Sophomore, Candor, N.Y. Thompson led the men for the second time this season and just missed All-American honors by four sports as he was the 44th overall finisher. He finished the 10k course in 30:24.6. The men recorded a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. Volleyball: Becah Fogle, Sophomore, Leander, Texas Fogle recorded 18 kills and 14 digs as the Bufs went 0-2 in the final week of play. She averaged 3.00 kills and 2.33 digs per set.
WomenGÇÖs Basketball: Chucky Jeffery, Freshman, Colorado Springs, Colo. Jeffery was named to the 2009 Omni Hotels Classic All-Tournament Team. She had 11 points, shooting 5-of-8 from the floor, six rebounds and a team season-high five steals in a first round win over Georgia Southern. Jeffery scored a career high 14 points, going 6-of-9 from the field, against Harvard, including the decisive basket on a driving lay-up with five seconds remaining in the game as the Buffaloes won 67-65. She also recorded five rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot in the championship game.
