HUDSONVILLE, Mich. -- The University of Colorado Hockey Team is one step closer to achieving its goal of becoming national champions, as the Buffaloes beat the William Patterson Pioneers, 8-4 on Tuesday at the Georgetown Ice Arena.
Senior Kevin Alpert, junior Sean Carpenter, and sophomore A.J. Koller led the way for the Buffs as each tallied two goals, and sophomore goaltender Kevin Litinsky made 37 saves in the Buffs' victory in the first day of pool play of the ACHA D-II National Championships.
CU (24-13-1) jumped out to an early lead as junior Max Myers got the Buffs on the board first at 8:54 in the first period. However, a late goal by WPUGÇÖs Rob PreziosoGÇÖs made it a tie game going into the first intermission.
Myers finished with four points for the game as he later added three assists in the matchup.
The second period wasnGÇÖt as nice for CU; it was all William Patterson (25-9-1) as John Gomez and Anthony Houlis both found the back of the net in a matter of two minutes of each other to give the Pioneers the 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
However, CU would bounce back in the third with five straight goals, beginning with a goal from Koller, 55 seconds into the period.
Carpenter would add two goals, and Alpert and junior Scott Tittle would also find the back of the net before WPUGÇÖs Ryan LaCorte would end the CU scoring streak with 2:01 to play.
Both Koller and Alpert added two more goals late, en route to the Buffs 8-4 victory.
Two of CUGÇÖs best sophomores, Conor Williams and Scott Cooley, both had great games passing the puck as they each finished with two assists.
Next up for the Buffs are the defending national champions, the Davenport Panthers (39-3-1), who beat Miami (OH) (13-9-1) today, 7-1.
Colorado took on Davenport earlier in the year at the Grand Valley Invitational in October where they lost 4-2, but they did make a statement to the Panthers for them not to take them lightly.
CU will take on the Panthers tomorrow in primetime at 5:00 pm (MT) in the final game of the day.
