BOULDER ? University of Colorado soccer coach Bill Hempen will head to La Manga, Spain from March 6-14 for the 10 Nations Tournament and help head U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team coach Jill Ellis form her next team and prepare the USA to qualify for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany.

Ellis and Hempen will bring 18 players to La Manga to play three matches against European U-20 teams, taking on Norway on March 9, France on March 11 and German on March 13.

“These kinds of opportunities to work with other coaches on this level are coaches dreams,” said Hempen.  “You can always learn something new by working with other prominent coaches and outstanding players.”

Since Hempen’s arrival in 2001, CU has continued to excel at the National level.  This trip marks Hempen’s second stint with Ellis and the U-20’s, a team that senior-to-be Nikki Marshall just won a gold medal with in the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup this past December in Chile.  Former Buffs Fran Munnelly (2002-05) and Katie Griffin (2003-06) have also spent time with the U-21 Women’s National Team when they were at CU.  Munnelly attended the U-21 National Camp in 2005, while Griffin spent two months with the U-21’s, culminating in the 2006 Nordic Cup, where the U.S. took second.

“They (Jill Ellis and U.S. Soccer) like what we’re doing here with our players,” added Hempen.  “It just validates what we’re doing at the University of Colorado with Nikki Marshall, Katie Griffin and Fran Munnelly all having had national team experience while playing as a Buff.”
