COLORADO SPRINGS ? University of Colorado redshirt freshman Sebastian Heisele, one of three Buffalo golfers participating individually in the field, finished third Tuesday as the UCCS Spring Invitational came to a close.

Heisele shot the fourth best score each day, including a 1-over par 73 on the 7,344-yard, par-72 Broadmoor East Course layout in Tuesday’s second and final round.  He finished with a 3-over 147 total, four shots back of the leaders.  The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to inclement weather Sunday evening that lasted into Monday morning until the course was cleared to play.

Heisele knew a little bit about the course having played there one previous time with the team last fall, but the Broadmoor takes more than one time around the track to get familiar with.

“He was hitting the ball 350, 360 yards off the tee,” said Jim Grady, CU’s assistant coach who accompanied the players on the trip.  “He had four eagle putts today, and though he didn’t make any of them, he did have six birdies for his round.  He flew some greens and made some bogeys because he hasn’t seen a lot of courses yet in his career where there are a lot of elevation changes, which is what the Broadmoor is all about.  But other than that, he played pretty well and those were two pretty good scores here.”

Sophomore Michael Imperato tied for 17th after shooting a 79 for a 155 total (13-over par), while senior Tom Gempel closed with an 82 for a 162 total, tying him for 35th.

UCCS’ Brian Morfeld claimed medalist honors, defeating Fort Lewis’ Luke Tanner on the first playoff hole.  Morfeld shot 74 on Tuesday while Tanner caught him by shooting a 69, but Morfeld made birdie with a 25-foot putt to win on the first extra hole.

Colorado did not post a team score because it needed four players here to do so.  The three Buffaloes here were the only three active team members who won’t make it past the 50 percent threshold of tournaments competed in for the year, so they had some competition days available to them and CU accepted UCCS coach Phil Trujillo’s invitation to send down any individuals who fit that requirement.

The three CU players who participated here will now join the rest of their teammates for five rounds of qualifying ahead of the Big 12 Conference championships, the first of which is this Friday at Fox Hill Country Club in Longmont.
