Scott Shows He Can Do It All

“I don’t know how long it was or how high it went or the hang time,” a smiling Scott said before he knew the official distance. “It was up there for a while.”
There were a few nay-saying fans who criticized the Buffs for listing Scott on the depth chart at punter both in the fall and during the spring, thinking the Buffs will never use him back there or that he doesn’t have the ability of a Division I punter. Coach Dan Hawkins has something to say about that.
“We’ll use him back there,” Hawkins said. “We will.”
But for most of the 11,700 fans that braved the forecast but never materializing rain, missing the Denver Nuggets playoff game and the Denver Broncos first round draft choices, seeing Scott perform as he did was a site for sore eyes.
After struggling through his freshman season, Scott showed fans a glimpse of the type of player Hawkins knows he will turn into.
“There’s going to be a time when he’s great,” Hawkins said. “He’s always been a great kid and I’ve been so impressed with how he’s handled all the hype. When you have first class guys on your team, that’s how it all comes together.”
Scott finished the spring game with 15 rushes for 90 yards and three receptions for 38 yards. In the first half, he had 11 carries for 62 yards and all three receptions for an even 100 yards on offense. Scott also had a 37 yard kickoff return and threw a beautiful ball to Markques Simas for a touchdown, but the play was called back because of a penalty.
Despite all that, Scott will be the first to say that the rushing the Buffs accomplished as a team (50 for 310, 6.2 average) are a result of his backfield teammates and the offensive line.
“The offensive line was awesome today,” Scott said. They opened up holes for us all day long. In the scrimmages, the running game wasn’t as effective, so it was good to get out there today and make some plays.”
Scott also said that Demetrius Sumler’s 47-yard play to end the scrimmage epitomized the entire game.
“I needed a break and Sumler came in and picked up 47 yards,” Scott said. “That’s how it’s going to be all season long. We’ll be there for each other and there’s a role we can all play.”
