BOULDER ? Qwest, FSN Rocky Mountain and the University of Colorado have named Drake Middle School (Arvada, Colo.) eighth grader Lindsey Haligas the eighth 2009-10 Winning Attitude award winner. Winners are selected from a pool of written stories submitted by middle school students explaining how their “Winning Attitude” made a difference in their communities.
Lindsey and her honors history classmates showed their Winning Attitudes by raising awareness and funds for residents and employees of two nursing homes in Arvada. This project has several layers and reaches the communities of Drake, Arvada and Colorado at-large. Lindsey’s class set up three fundraisers and set a goal of $2,000 to give back to the community. The fundraisers include a penny drive, a benefit dinner and donations. Another layer of the project involves visiting the Mount Vista Nursing Home weekly to host bingo games and art activities. The students and residents have already learned a great deal from each other and Lindsay looks forward to making more visits. “We truly believe that this project will change not only the lives that we have touched during our service, but our own families and our own lives,” Lindsey said. By showing her winning attitude not only did she help others, but Lindsey found out how good it feels to make a difference in her community as well.
