BOULDER ? Qwest, FSN Rocky Mountain and the University of Colorado have named Fremont Middle School (Florence, Colo.) sixth grader Shelby Schicke the ninth 2009-10 Winning Attitude award winner. Winners are selected from a pool of written stories submitted by middle school students explaining how their “Winning Attitude” made a difference in their communities.
Shelby showed her Winning Attitude by helping her softball teammate overcome a tough stretch during their game. Shelby’s team was playing a game on a very hot day and her team’s pitcher was struggling to keep the opposing batters at bay. After a rough inning, the pitcher felt as if she had let the team down. Shelby explained to her teammate that she did not let the team down; the team is just there to play and have fun. As the game progressed, the pitcher was able to regain her confidence and find her groove. With Shelby’s team up by just one in the final inning, the pitcher was able to find the strike zone after falling behind in the count, to strike out the final batter. By showing her winning attitude, Shelby was able to lead a struggling teammate to regain her confidence, and lead the team to victory.
Shelby and her classmates were honored during the Colorado vs. Kansas State men’s basketball game on Saturday, January 16.
This is the fourth year Qwest, FSN and CU have come together to honor middle school students around Colorado for the differences they can make in their communities by providing outstanding efforts in sportsmanship, community involvement and teamwork. One remaining middle school student will be chosen as a winner and recognized at a Colorado men’s basketball home game and earn a $1,000 contribution for their school from Qwest.
One grand prize winner will be selected among the 10 winning entrants and will receive the opportunity to host a school-wide pep rally emceed by an on-air talent from FSN Rocky Mountain. CU Coaches and student-athletes will speak at the pep rally and the CU cheerleaders and pep band will also be there to perform. The grand prize winner receives a $2,500 contribution from Qwest for their school.
