BOULDER-Former Colorado soccer standout Michelle Wenino has decided to leave the Chicago Red Stars of  Women's Professional Soccer  (WPS) to play for SC Freiburg in Germany.

"I want to be able to develop as a player every day and gain as much as I can out of the experience," Wenino said. "Most of the girls playing in professional leagues have played in many countries and gained the experiences, and I have not had that opportunity until now."

Wenino was a member of the Red Stars developmental squad during the 2009 season and appeared in one game. After the season concluded, SC Freiburg called Wenino looking for a defender, and Wenino decided, "to take them up on the offer of a lifetime."

CU head coach Bill Hempen says experience is what Wenino will benefit most from making the move to play in Germany. "Training is one thing but playing allows for game speed growth," said Hempen.

Wenino, who worked her way up from a walk-on as a freshman at Colorado to a team captain as a senior, wrapped up her career as a two-time first team All-Big 12 Conference selection. She was a 2007 NSCAA second-team All-Central Region pick and the 2008 Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year.

Wenino played in 61 games during her time as a Buffalo and scored six goals while tallying 13 points.

"I really wanted to go somewhere I could play in games and gain confidence on the field," Wenino said. "This way I can eventually come back to play in the WPS."
