BOULDER ? Qwest, FSN Rocky Mountain and the University of Colorado have named Sagewood Middle School seventh grader Penmai Chongtoua the tenth and final 2009-10 Winning Attitude award winner.  Winners are selected from a pool of written stories submitted by middle school students explaining how their “Winning Attitude” made a difference in their communities.

Penmai showed her Winning Attitude by helping raise her team’s spirits after they were being dominated by a physically imposing volleyball team. During the match, her squad was playing well, but every time they tried to send the ball over the net it was blocked by the tall opponents.  With her team dejected and wanting to give up, Penmai told her team that they had come too far and practiced too hard to just give up. She told her team that even though the other squad was taller it didn’t mean that they had to dominate because they didn’t have the same team spirit as Penmai’s team.  The team’s attitude changed, and they started to hit the ball over the net past the block. This changed the course of the match, and although Penmai’s team didn’t come out on top, they still showed resilience and winning attitudes while facing a daunting opponent.

Penmai and her classmates will be honored during the Colorado vs. Missouri basketball game Saturday, February 6 and will receive a $1,000 contribution from Qwest.  The game tips off at 2 p.m.

This is the fourth year Qwest, FSN and CU have come together to honor middle school students around Colorado for the differences they can make in their communities by providing outstanding efforts in sportsmanship, community involvement and teamwork.

Sagewood Middle School is the final winner of this year’s Winning Attitude program, and is now eligible to become the grand prize winner.  The grand prize winner will be selected among the 10 preliminary winning entrants and will receive the opportunity to host a school-wide pep rally emceed by an on-air personality from FSN Rocky Mountain.  CU coaches and student-athletes will speak at the pep rally and the CU cheerleaders and pep band will also perform.  The grand prize winner receives a $2,500 contribution from Qwest for their school.
