Higgins and Coburn Named CU Athlete's of the Week

Higgins, a Danville, Calif. (The Pendleton School [Bradenton, Fla.]) native, averaged 24.5 points and 4.5 rebounds as the Colorado Buffaloes picked up victories at Nebraska (81-68) and against Texas Tech (101-90). He started with 19 points, a team-high six rebounds, four steals and four assists versus the Huskers. Higgins followed that performance with a game-high 30 points, three rebounds and two steals against the Red Raiders. It was his third 30-point game of 2009-10 and the fifth of his career. In two contests, he shot 71.4 percent from the field (15-of-21), including 1-of-3 from beyond the arc; Higgins also made 18-of-24 (.750) free throws. The 30 points pushed Higgins four spots from 12th to ninth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,373 points.
Coburn, a native of Crested Butte, Colo. (Crested Butte), raced to the 10th fastest mile time in CU history at the UW Final Qualifier on Saturday. Coburn ran a personal record 4 minutes, 42.56 seconds, dropping 1.31 seconds off her time from last weekend's conference championship (4:43.87). She currently ranks 31st in the nation. Coburn came in fourth overall at the meet and was the third highest collegiate finisher. Southern Utah's Sharla Manuele won the race in 4:39.82 and Nebraska's Ashley Miller was second (4:40.50).

Tennis:

Belassi won her No. 2 singles match in straight sets and paired
with teammate Melisa Esposito at the No. 1 doubles slot helping the
Colorado women's tennis team to a 7-0 sweep over Northern Colorado.
Belassi, a senior from Paysand+¦, Uruguay was the first one off the
court Saturday defeating Jennifer Whateley 6-2, 6-0 for her seventh
straight singles victory. Earlier in the day, Belassi teamed with
Esposito for their fourth straight win. Belassi/Esposito are the
No. 57 nationally ranked duo.
Women's
Basketball: Alyssa Fressle, Sophomore, Highlands Ranch,
Colo.
Fressle averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and
2.5 assists per game as the Buffs finished the week 0-2. In a close
70-72 loss to Kansas State, Fressle scored a season high 17 points
while shooting 7-for-10 from the field. She finished with 10 points
and six rebounds in a 41-59 loss at No. 16 Iowa State. In addition
to leading the team in scoring for the week, Fressle was named on
the Big 12 all-academic first team.
