BOULDER - University of Colorado freshman guard Alec Burks was named to the 2009-10 Sporting News All-Freshman Second Team, in addition to being named to a pair of Rookie of the Year honors at newspapers that cover the Big 12 Conference throughout the season.

In addition to the Sporting News, Burks, from Grandview, Mo., a suburb outside of Kansas City, was also named the Kansas City Star and the Austin American-Statesman (Texas) Rookie of the Year, in their regular season review of outstanding Big 12 Conference players.

In the Kansas City Star, Burks also made the all-Freshman team that was one of six Big 12 specialty teams selected by a panel of media members who regularly cover the conference. Burks was the only CU player selected to any of the teams (All-Newcomer, All-Underrated, All-Reserve, All-Defense, All-Improved, All-Newcomer).

Burks averaged 17.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, and shot a team-best .524 from the field in 15 Big 12 games. On the season, he has scored 488 points becoming the CU freshman record holder. In the latest NCAA statistics, he ranks fourth nationally among freshmen in points and field-goal percentage.

The Buffaloes, seeded No. 8 in the Big 12 Basketball Championships, play No. 9 seed Texas Tech on Wednesday, March 10 at 10:37 a.m. (MST). The conference championships are being played at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.
