BOULDER - CenturyLink, ROOT SPORTS and the University of Colorado have named Casey Middle School (Boulder, Colo.) sixth grader Everett "Scooter" Jones the fifth Winning Attitude award recipient of 2011-12.  Winners are selected from a pool of written essays submitted by Colorado middle school students explaining how their winning attitude has made a difference in their communities.

Jones demonstrated his winning attitude by forming a strong bond with his friend Lizzie, who has physical disabilities.  Jones, a role model for his fellow classmates, showed others how to be compassionate and open minded to all students. Jones wrote, "Throughout all of our adventures and journeys, I taught Lizzie some things but she taught me more.  She made me the person I am today.  She taught me how to patient and to be ready for anything.  She also taught me that you cannot judge a person by the way that they look. I hope everyone finds a "Lizzie" in their lives."

Casey Middle School Principal, Allison Boggs adds, "Scooter represents the spirit of Casey Middle School. We strive to create a strong, caring, and supportive community of learners. His actions towards others embody our belief that all students can learn and contribute important things that benefit us all."

Jones and his classmates will be honored at halftime of the Colorado vs. San Francisco women's basketball game Wednesday, November 30, with a 7 p.m. tip-off.

The Winning Attitude essay contest is back for the sixth consecutive year. The program has been developed and sponsored by CenturyLink and ROOT SPORTS in partnership with the University of Colorado to recognize Colorado middle school students that make a difference in their communities by providing outstanding efforts in sportsmanship, community involvement and teamwork.  Middle school students should visit www.CUBuffs.com/winningattitude to submit a story about their winning attitude.
