BOULDER GÇô JohnstownGÇÖs Steve McCarthy has been selected as this weekGÇÖs winner of the Sports Authority Hometown Heroes program, a partnership between the University of Colorado and Sports Authority to recognize heroes in the local sports community.

Steve McCarthy  is an epitome of a role model to his community. He has dedicated countless hours in ensuring his baseball and football teams develop not only athletically but as students and people alike. Along with being a respectable coach, McCarthy is a mentor through his church in the Kids Hope USA program.

McCarthy has been involved in many different ways in the Johnstown Milliken area for several years. His admirable coaching traits havenGÇÖt gone unnoticed, as both his JM league football team and his TRPR youth baseball team have accomplished outstanding skills that can be used on and off the field.

The main focus for McCarthy is teaching his players the value of being a kid first, then a student and last (but not least) an athlete. Having such a mentality around youth teams is an important and an admired trait McCarthy proudly shares. He not only teaches his players the required skills for their sport, but most importantly how to grow into respectable young men.

Along with his dedication to coaching, McCarthy serves as a mentor to a second grader through the Kids Hope USA program. He meets up with this child on a weekly basis. He supports him in his schooling and offers consistent support.

If coaching two sports and being a mentor wasnGÇÖt enough involvement, McCarthy also leads his church in hosting the community Thanksgiving meal. His selflessness and involvement is something the community can be thankful for in this season of giving.

McCarthy is nominated by Shawn Hughes who says, GÇ£His coaching philosophy and leadership is unprecedented. He is a great asset to our community and our youth.GÇ¥

Sports Authority and the University of Colorado athletic department are honored to recognize Steve McCarthy as a Sports Authority Hometown Hero.  As the winner, McCarthy will receive a $100 gift card to Sports Authority, a t-shirt and a certification of merit. If you know of a Hometown Hero, please nominate them at www.cubuffs.com/hometownheroes.

Due to NCAA rules and regulations regarding recruiting, any high school aged person (ninth grade and above, or seventh grade and above for boys basketball) and any coach of a high school aged student-athlete are not eligible for this program.
