Wallace Named To Team Canada
BOULDER GÇô University of Colorado junior Jess Wallace was named to Team Canada, an amateur national team that aids in development of the nationGÇÖs best golfers and assists them in attending events across the globe over the summer.
The program is year-round in scope and encompasses fitness, sports psychology, nutrition, technique, equipment and international competition. Founded in 2003, itGÇÖs a part of Golf CanadaGÇÖs strong commitment to development the nationGÇÖs best amateur golfers.
GÇ£I havenGÇÖt been playing golf with the goal of getting on this team,GÇ¥ Wallace said. GÇ£I just play the most competitive tournaments I can play in, and some count more for a better ranking than others. ItGÇÖs an honor to represent my country and IGÇÖm looking forward to playing tournaments and representing Canada.GÇ¥
Selection takes place in November and is based on objective performance results which are reviewed by a committee. The objective of the program is to provide the best support and develop players and assist them in attaining their long and short term goals.
The highlights of being a member of Team Canada include entrance in the British Amateur Championships in Scotland and the Canadian Amateur Championships. If those on the team qualify, they will also get paid trips to the United States Open and a few team members get an exemption into the Canadian Open.
Wallace was a late addition to the squad prior to the first training camp last month in Port St. Lucie, Fla., at the Perfect Drive Course at PGA Village. The days there consisted of getting up at 6 a.m., working out, practicing in the morning, lunch and then a round of golf in the afternoon.
Wallace, coach Anne Kelly and the Buffaloes are preparing for the beginning of their spring season. The Buffs will open the spring with a trip to California for the Peg Barnhard Stanford Invitational on Feb. 19-20.
