Robert Polet, chairman/CEO of Gucci; Shining Moment: Eugene might not be the official cradle of American track and field, but starting the list with another city would be a travesty. In fact, Eugene calls itself GÇ£Track Town, USA.GÇ¥ Much of the credit belongs to the legendary Bill Bowerman, whose Oregon track teams produced four NCAA team championships and 24 individual NCAA champions. Bowerman co-founded what would become Nike, Inc. with Phil Knight, who ran for Bowerman at Oregon. Using his wifeGÇÖs waffle iron to develop sure-grip rubber soles, Bowerman designed some of NikeGÇÖs best-selling running shoes. Bet You DidnGÇÖt Know: OregonGÇÖs Matthew Knight Arena was named after Phil KnightGÇÖs late son . . . Phil Knight has spent over $300 million on Oregon athletics, according to Sports Illustrated . . . The Ducks have participated in three BCS football games, the first being in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl, where they defeated the Buffs 38-16. It would be OregonGÇÖs first and only BCS bowl win; the Ducks lost to Ohio State in the 2010 Rose Bowl and to Auburn in the 2011 BCS Championship game . . . Oregon has played in five Rose Bowls, the first in 1917. Other appearances came in 1920, 1957, 1995 and 2010 . . . The DucksGÇÖ 1939 NCAA championship team in menGÇÖs basketball was nicknamed GÇ£The Tall Firs.GÇ¥ . . . Steve Prefontaine, who died at age 24 in a car accident near campus, won three NCAA menGÇÖs cross country championships and four consecutive 5,000-meter titles in his four years at Oregon . . . Colorado joins the nationGÇÖs most dominant conference in womenGÇÖs golf, featuring the reigning NCAA champion in UCLA. The Pac-10 has won three of the past four national championships (Arizona State in 2009, USC in 2008) and 14 total since 1990. Arizona State leads the Pac-12 with seven national titles, while UCLA has won three, and both Arizona and USC have won two each. The Pac-10 also boasts 12 NCAA individual champions dating back to 1985. Included in this list is LPGA great Annika Sorenstam, who won the 1991 NCAA individual championship while representing Arizona. USC won the Pac-10 in 2011, their third team conference title. The Pac-10 has been dominated by Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, and USC since the Pac-10 Championship began in 1987. Those four schools have combined for all but two conference championships (Stanford in 1999, California in 2003) with the Sun Devils leading the way with eight Pac-10 titles. This past season CU finished fourth at the Peg Barnard Invitational hosted by Stanford. California won the event with Stanford coming in second, while the Buffs finished ahead of other Pac-12 teams Washington (fifth) and Washington State (ninth). The 2012 WomenGÇÖs Pac-12 Golf Championships will be hosted by Washington State and played at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman. |
CU In The Pac-12...W Golf Coach Anne KellyGÇÖs take: GÇ£The Pac-10 is probably the best golf conference for women in the country. (The league) qualified seven or eight teams for the NCAA Regionals and over half of those made it to the championships, which UCLA won. The weather is huge for our sport, and the California and Arizona schools have the best of it. That contributes to the long tradition of winning in all those programs. Oregon State and Washington State have been down a little recently, but both of those schools have had success, too. The whole conference, top to bottom, is competitive. I think any team that finishes in the top half of the Pac-12 will be a very good golf team, and I think weGÇÖll be very competitive.
Joining the conference will undoubtedly enhance our recruiting; weGÇÖve already got eight of our 10 roster players from Southern California, and because of joining the Pac-12 and having a better quality team the interest for 2012 and 2013 recruits from that area should be high. We also picked up a good transfer (Alex Stewart, Purdue) who knows Emily (Talley, Napa, Calif.) and Jess (Wallace, Langley, B.C.). Jess had a good transfer experience (from Pepperdine) and proved her game GÇô and thatGÇÖs one of the reasons (Stewart) looked at us. Plus, the history of womenGÇÖs golf in the Pac-10 makes it very recognizable to recruits.
