Classic CU: Buffs Knock Off Stanford, Gain West Final

Bet You DidnGÇÖt Know: Stanford has won the NACDA DirectorsGÇÖ Cup (formerly the Sears Cup) in 16 of the 17 years of competition...StanfordGÇÖs most recent NCAA titlist is the 2011 womenGÇÖs water polo team. The Cardinal has had at least one NCAA team champ since the 1976-77 school year...Stanford was the next-to-last coaching stop for Pop Warner (1924-32)...In the 2008 Summer Olympics in Bejing, Stanford athletes accounted for 28 medals (eight gold) GÇô a total that topped any other American university...CU won its first menGÇÖs cross country national title in 2001, nudging Stanford by a point...Stanford shut out CU 33-0 on Nov. 25, 1904, dealing the Buffs their first loss against what would be a member of their new conference...The Buffs and Cardinal have played three times in the GÇ£Sweet 16GÇ¥ of womenGÇÖs basketball, with CU winning twice (1993, 2002) and Stanford once (1994)...HarbaughGÇÖs four-season record at Stanford was 29-21, including 20-6 over the last two seasons.

Shining Moment: The Cardinal capped a 12-1 football season GÇô the 11-1 regular-season mark was the best in school history GÇô in the 2011 Orange Bowl by dismantling Virginia Tech, 40-12. After leading by a point (13-12) at halftime, Stanford pulled away in the second half behind junior quarterback Andrew Luck, who tossed three touchdown passes and was named the gameGÇÖs MVP. It would be Stanford Coach Jim HarbaughGÇÖs final game with the Cardinal; he accepted an offer to coach the San Francisco 49ers. But Luck opted to skip the NFL draft and returns for his senior year, giving Stanford the nationGÇÖs top-rated QB entering the 2011 season.

Buffs vs. Cardinal/By The Numbers: Football: Tied at 3-3; M Basketball: SU leads 7-3; W Basketball: SU leads 5-4; Volleyball: SU leads 7-0; Soccer: SU leads 2-0; Tennis: SU leads 3-0.

CU head coach Nicole Kenneally on Pac-12 Tennis -- GÇ£The four that stand out are the four California schools GÇô Stanford, USC, UCLA and Cal. TheyGÇÖre traditionally top 10 programs. Stanford has more national titles than everyone else combined; theyGÇÖre definitely the powerhouse but the other three arenGÇÖt that far behind. Arizona State has been a typical top 20 program as well, and it looks like Arizona is making a comeback after a couple of down years. And Washington has made a move to the top 20. The Big 12 has been strong, but if youGÇÖre looking at conferences overall, thereGÇÖs nothing that can compare to the Pac-12. But itGÇÖs a great challenge, a fun challenge for us. It opens up some doors for us in California; Colorado has a name academically and athletically on the West Coast. And I believe that will help our recruiting.GÇ¥

The Pac-10 in womenGÇÖs tennis is perhaps the most successful conference in the nation. Entering the 2011 NCAA Tournament, eight Pac-10 schools earned berths into the 64-team field (including Utah; Oregon State does not have womenGÇÖs tennis). Led by No. 1 seed and defending champion Stanford, the Cardinal have won 17 national titles in its history, Southern California has claimed five national crowns, with UCLA winning three times.

In the final May 2011 national rankings, the Pac-10 (including Utah) had eight schools in the top-50. More impressively, five of those schools were represented in the top-20, and three in the top-10.

When the new conference begins matches against one another in January 2012, the Buffaloes will play host to California (Mar. 9), Stanford (Mar. 11), UCLA (Mar. 23), and USC (Mar. 25). It will mark the first time in school history, all four schools will play in Boulder.

Overall, the Buffaloes will play Cal for the first time in its history; Stanford for only the fourth time in 33 years, and second time in four years (since 2009); UCLA for the first time in 30 years (1982); and USC for only the fifth time, the last being in 1998.

CU has recently matched up against Oregon and Utah, both in 2011, and last played Arizona in 2008 with the Buffs winning the last two in the series. The Buffs have won both meetings in its history with Washington State (2006), have not played Washington (1996) in 16 years and Arizona State (1987) in 25 years.
