Shining Moment: The BruinsGÇÖ basketball legacy under the late John Wooden remains unmatched. Of UCLAGÇÖs 11 NCAA Championships in hoops, 10 came during WoodenGÇÖs magnificent reign, including a remarkable seven consecutive national titles. The seventh was won in 1973 in St. Louis against Memphis State, an 87-66 victory that saw UCLA cap a second straight 30-0 season and center Bill Walton score 44 points on 21-of-22 shooting from the field. WoodenGÇÖs 1974-75 team also would win the NCAA title, giving him 10 championships in 12 seasons. He retired with a 620-147 record. Bet You DidnGÇÖt Know: UCLA has won 107 NCAA team championships ? the most of any Pac-12 schools and the highest total nationally. The Pac-10 Conference has won five of the last eight NCAA team titles. Washington won the last one in 2008, while Stanford has accounted for titles in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The conference had four schools ranked in the top nine at the end of the 2010 season. Washington led the league at fourth with Oregon coming in at sixth, Stanford seventh and Arizona ranked ninth. The Cardinal won the 2010 league championship by three points over Arizona (65), while Oregon and Washington tied for third with 68 points. The Pac-10 didnGÇÖt fair quite as well at the national meet. The Wildcats finished 11th overall and the Ducks placed 12th. The Cardinal came in at 13th and Washington was 16th. Arizona State will host the very first Pac-12 Championship this fall in what is sure to be a very competitive field. Classic CU: Buff Women Win 2000 National Title |
CU In The Pac-12 . . . Cross Country Coach Mark WetmoreGÇÖs Take: GÇ£The Pac-10 has been a traditionally excellent cross country conference for men and women ? but so has the Big 12. With our move, it will make the Pac-12 the best cross country conference in the country. We have generally expected to be in the top two in the Big 12 and on a good day we can expect that again. But the Pac-12 will be a little deeper than what weGÇÖre used to and on a bad day we could be fourth or fifth. On the womenGÇÖs side, there were four excellent teams this year ? Washington, Stanford, Oregon and Arizona. They traded victories when they met throughout the season; no one team dominated. And theyGÇÖll all be good teams next fall. I would guess, on paper, probably Oregon has a little edge. But we have an excellent team, too. Our women will be good. WeGÇÖre a rare ? for us ? combination of talent and depth. We should have an excellent seventh, eighth and ninth runner, and usually we have an excellent five. So we could even afford a bad day and still be good ? as can Stanford, as can Oregon, as can Washington. I donGÇÖt see (Pac-12 membership) as a recruiting benefit, but IGÇÖm willing to accept the possibility that it may be. High school students may be more attracted to the Pac-12 than they were the Big 12. But again, we donGÇÖt have a conference schedule as say, volleyball or basketball, and so it changes where you go once in the fall, once in the winter and once in outdoor track. A recruit looking at our schedule wonGÇÖt see a very different looking schedule.GÇ¥ |
