When GÇ£best everGÇ¥ lists of college teams are compiled, the 1972 Trojans, coached by John McKay, always draw strong consideration. USC destroyed Ohio State 42-17 in that seasonGÇÖs Rose Bowl, finishing 12-0 and becoming the first team to be named No. 1 on every ballot cast in the coachesGÇÖ and media poll. The GÇÖ72 Trojans won every game by nearly 28 points. Their schedule featured six ranked teams ? No. 4 Nebraska, No. 10 Notre Dame, No. 14 UCLA, No. 15 Stanford, No. 18 Washington and No. 3 Ohio State in the Rose Bowl ? and USC won those six by an average of 20.2 points. Ten Trojans were selected in the GÇÖ73 NFL Draft, including first-round choices Charles Young (tight end), Sam GÇ£BamGÇ¥ Cunningham (fullback) and Pete Adams (offensive tackle). Among the underclassmen were Lynn Swann (receiver), Anthony Davis (running back) and Richard Wood (linebacker). The quarterbacks were Mike Rae and Pat Haden. Bet You DidnGÇÖt Know: USCGÇÖs football rivalry with Notre Dame predates its rivalry with UCLA by three years (1926-1929) and is among the gameGÇÖs greatest intersectional rivalries...USCGÇÖs 30 Rose Bowl appearances is an NCAA team high...The first game of CUGÇÖs Eddie Crowder Era in football (Sept. 21, 1963) matched the Buffs against the No. 1 Trojans. USC won a hard-fought battle, 14-0...Another CU first, another CU loss: In their inaugural appearance in the NCAA Tournament (menGÇÖs), the Buffs were beaten 38-32 by the Trojans on March 20, 1940 in the NCAA Western Regionals...The TrojansGÇÖ 12 NCAA baseball championships is double the next-best schools (LSU, Texas)...When the U.S. won its first gold medal in volleyball, the 1984 squad featured USCGÇÖs Dusty Dvorak, Steve Timmons and Pat Powers...Of the TrojansGÇÖ unprecedented 26 NCAA track/field title, nine straight were won from 1935-43... In the 1976 Olympics, USC swimmers won more medals than any other country except the U.S...NCAA sanctions against USCGÇÖs football program in the aftermath of the Reggie Bush investigation made the Trojans ineligible for postseason competition in 2010 and 2011, as well as costing them their 2004 BCS national title and 30 scholarships (2011-13)...The basketball programGÇÖs potential recruiting days in 2010-11 were reduced and its postseason opportunities aborted as a result NCAA sanctions in the wake of former player O.J. Mayo receiving improper benefits. Quotable: GÇ£Opening games make me nervous. To tell the truth, IGÇÖd rather open with our second game.GÇ¥ ? Pac-10 womenGÇÖs soccer continually produces NCAA tournament teams with UCLA and Stanford leading the league year after year. Since the conference added the sport in 1993, UCLA has nine league titles while Stanford has seven, including the last two. Since the first season of womenGÇÖs soccer at Stanford in 1984, the Cardinal has made 20 NCAA postseason appearances. In his eight seasons at Stanford, three-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year Paul Ratcliffe continually produces a winning program which includes three consecutive College Cup Appearances (2008-10). The 2010 Cardinal season ended in a 1-0 loss to Notre Dame in the NCAA College Cup championship game. In the 18 seasons of womenGÇÖs soccer at UCLA, the Bruins have made 15 postseason appearances with the past two seasonsGÇÖ runs ending in losses to conference rival Stanford. Head coach Jillian Ellis has coached her team to eight College Cup Appearances in her 14 years at UCLA. The 2011 Pac-12 womenGÇÖs soccer schedule will play a Friday-Sunday schedule and will not include a conference tournament. |
CU In The Pac-12 . . . Soccer Coach Bill HempenGÇÖs Take: GÇ£Overall, itGÇÖs a strong conference, with Stanford and UCLA at the top of the table, then USC and Cal ? and now Washington ? seeming to be the next best teams. The Oregon schools are pretty good, too. If you go back the past several years, and maybe as far back as eight, there has been at least one Pac-10 team in the Final Four ? and sometimes two. But we think we can compete right away. We have played enough Pac-10 teams since IGÇÖve been here to know a little about what it will take to compete. But also from past experience, we know they all will be difficult to compete against. Our biggest benefit (on being in the Pac-12) is the recognition on the West Coast, where there are a lot of very good players.GÇ¥ |
