DeWitt Leads CU Multis At the Potts Indoor Invite

BOULDER - University of Colorado redshirt sophomore Jason DeWitt is currently in second place after the first day of the heptathlon at the Potts Indoor Invitational.
DeWitt recorded a personal-best first day point total of 2,802 on Thursday evening. He was fifth in the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish in 7.36 seconds. DeWitt followed up that performance with a long jump of 20 feet, 7.75 inches (third overall). He placed second in the shot put, recording a throw of 38-11.75 and finished the day clearing a height of 6-06.25 in the high jump, second overall.
"I'm very proud of Jason's performances today and I'm excited for his future as a combined events athlete," assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. "He's very dialed in on every aspect this year including nutrition and sleep. He's adjusted well to college life and it's showing by how much he has improved since he got here. I'm very excited to see him compete for the next couple of years."
Senior Eddie Taylor is in third-place with 2,706 points. He finished the 60 in 7.23 (fourth), was fourth in the long jump (20-04.25), placed sixth in the shot put (35-05.75) and ended the day tied for third in the high jump (6-04). Junior Brock Emory is ninth overall (1,992). He was seventh in the 60 (7.52), fouled in the long jump, took fifth in the shot put (36-01.25) and tied for third in the high jump (6-04).
"I feel like the guys did an amazing job today," Malone said. "We had six lifetime personal bests amongst the group and that is pretty outstanding. We do have some work to do this season, which is a good thing. A lot of our warm-ups were just tremendous and we wish those could have been marked, but they were warm-ups so we need to figure out a way to get those marks during the meet."
Former CU track athlete Brandon Johnson is in first place overall with 2,994 points, winning three of the four events. Johnson finished the 60 in 7.18, jumped 23-08.25 in the long jump and cleared a mark of 6-07.50 in the high jump. He was ninth in the shot put with a throw of 32-10.50.
"I'd like to say congratulations to Brandon Johnson," Malone also said. "It's been really fun today watching him use his decathlon training for college. He had a really great day today and that has been fun to see."
The second day of the meet is on Friday, Jan. 20 and will consist of the remaining three events of the heptathlon and the women will also compete in the pentathlon. The day will start at 3 p.m. with the 60-meter hurdles of the women's pentathlon and the men's 60 hurdles will be contested at 3:15.
Malone is very excited to see her group compete again tomorrow as she's been working hard to build the combined events program since arriving at CU five years ago.
"I'm thankful to (head coach) Mark Wetmore for letting us build the combined events program here," she said. "I'm really excited about what we are able to do and hopefully we will be making a big impact on the conference level this year.
The Potts Invite will conclude on Saturday, Jan. 21. The first events are the men's weight throw and the women's shot put at 10 a.m.; running events will commence at 2 p.m. with the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash. A complete schedule is available at CUBuffs.com.
