Brittany Fan Wins Hawaii State Open Amateur Division

KOHALA COAST, Hawaii GÇô University of Colorado womenGÇÖs golf
signee Brittany Fan won the 2013 Mauna Lani Resort Hawaii State
Open womenGÇÖs amateur division title here Sunday, shooting 5-over
par 221 (77-73-71). Her scorecard also placed her second overall
and 10 strokes over her next amateur opponent.
GÇ£IGÇÖm very happy for Brittany and her win in the womenGÇÖs amateur
division of the Hawaii State Open,GÇ¥ CU head coach Anne
Kelly said. GÇ£She seems to never give up on a round even when
she may have a bad break. We are really looking forward to Brittany
joining our team next year.GÇ¥
Fan, who signed with CU in November, struggled on her first day of
competition, but steadily improved for a strong finish. Fan was
challenged early on a par 3 set between a bunker and water. Fan
said she faced one of the hardest bunker shots sheGÇÖs hit in a while
when she hit a buried bunker shot with the wind and grain running
away from her and towards the water. Though she chipped her way
back onto the green, she missed her first putt and double bogeyed.
Fan finished the front nine at an even par, with her two birdies
helping to cover her tough double bogey.
Fan began the back nine with another birdie to put her 1-under par.
Windy conditions made for a few more tricky situations, and Fan had
to 3-putt on a par 3 and a par 5. Fan said despite the difficulties
she had on a few holes, she played pretty well on the other
15.
Though she had issues with snap hooks in the final two rounds, Fan
made seven birdies and continued to improve in her putting game to
shed several strokes each day of competition.
GÇ£I did get some golf stress,GÇ¥ Fan said of the second round, GÇ£but
because I was able to keep my emotions under control and keep
grinding, I turned what could have been a disaster into something a
little better.GÇ¥
FanGÇÖs next tournament will be the Jones/Doherty WomenGÇÖs Amateur
Championship in Florida. The Buffaloes begin the spring portion of
their season on February 15 with the Peg Barnard Invitational in
Stanford, Calif.
