Tennis Begins Spring Season Friday

BOULDER GÇô The University of Colorado womenGÇÖs tennis team returns
to the court for the spring season beginning this Friday and
Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center (Millennium Harvest
House).
The Buffaloes will play four matches over the next nine days with
the home opener this Friday against Northern Colorado with first
serve beginning at Noon.
On Saturday, the womenGÇÖs team returns to the court, again to take on Boise State at 11 a.m.
Colorado has dominated the all-time series against the Bears holding a 30-2 advantage, including the last 17 in a row since 1985. Against Boise State, CU leads the series, 5-3, however, the Broncos have won the last three matches since 2009.
CU has 12 home matches from January through March.
Fifteen-Year head coach Nicole Kenneally returns three seniors and a pair of juniors, sophomores, and freshmen to the team coming off a tied for eighth finish in the Pac-12 Conference.
Carla Manzi Tenorio and Winde Janssens close their senior years
as the only three-year letterwinners on this yearGÇÖs roster, while
Mattison Sperry enters her second year as a walk-on, one year
letterwinner. Both Manzi Tenorio and Janssens are each moving up
the all-time singles and doubles career lists.
Manzi Tenorio and Janssens have won 45 and 44 singles victories,
respectively, and both rank No. 34 and No. 35, respectively. In
doubles, Manzi Tenorio is tied for No. 12 (54 wins) and Janssens is
No. 24 with 46 wins.
The Fall 2013 campaign was a successful one for sophomore Alex Aiello, who won a team-best 10 singles victories, in addition to winning seven of her last eight singles matches of the season. Freshman Nuria Orme+¦o Ruiz won nine matches, while juniors Julyette Steur and Ashley Tiefel each won six singles matches. In doubles, Janssens and Orme+¦o Ruiz won a team-best seven matches in nine outings.
Later in the conference season, CU fans will have a chance to
watch the Buffaloes on the road when the Pac-12 Network will
televise the match at No. 43 Washington (12:30 p.m.,
MT).
The Pac-12 regarded as the best conference for womenGÇÖs tennis
features eight of 10 schools nationally ranked among the Top-75
schools. Defending champion Stanford is ranked at the top, followed
by UCLA (No. 5), USC (No. 6), and California (No. 8) rounding out
conference teams in the top 10. All four schools will visit Boulder
in March.
After the back-to-back non-conference matches this weekend with UNC and Boise State, the Buffs will host Air Force and Colorado State at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 1. CU will first play the Falcons at 10 a.m., then later in the day take on the Rams, beginning at 4 p.m.
