Lacrosse Spring Practice Begins, Prepare For Upcoming Season

BOULDER GÇô The semester break is over, which means spring practice is underway for the University of Colorado lacrosse team as the Buffaloes returned to Kittredge Field this week to continue preparation for their second season as a varsity sport.

The Buffaloes, a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation have a solid foundation to build on after an impressive inaugural season. In 2014, Colorado posted an 11-8 overall record and finished tied for third in the MPSF standings with a 6-3 conference mark, as it was one of six teams to earn an MPSF Tournament bid.

GÇ£Our staff is really looking forward to the 2015 season,GÇ¥ said Colorado head coach Ann Elliott. GÇ£It is so exciting to have the players back and to be able to pick up where we left off this fall.GÇ¥

Colorado played seven exhibition games in September and October, which was highlighted by a weekend road trip to Loyola Academy, Ill. as they competed in a three-team tournament against Northwestern and Marquette.

GÇ£Our focus is always on getting better every day and competing every practice to push each other to the next level,GÇ¥ Elliott said. GÇ£Fitness, and both mental and physical toughness will be crucial for us this season.GÇ¥

Colorado returns 19 of 23 from last yearGÇÖs roster, highlighted by midfielder Johnna Fusco and attack Cali Castagnola. The duo turned in stellar performances during their debut season. Fusco led the Buffs with 45 goals and 62 points while Castagnola was second in scoring, tallying 39 goals and was third on the team with eight assists. The Buffs will also welcome 12 new freshmen to the squad from ElliottGÇÖs 2015 recruiting class.

"We have just under a month before our first competition and we want to make sure we take advantage of every day,GÇ¥ said Elliott. GÇ£This is a new year and team for us. We are looking forward to our continued growth as a team and seeing what we can do this spring against the great opponents we have on our schedule.GÇ¥

The BuffsGÇÖ 2015 regular season opener is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. Colorado hosts conference opponent Denver at Kittredge Field as the Buffs will look to pick up its first win against the Pioneers.
