Tennis Continues Non-Conference Slate

BOULDER GÇô The
University of Colorado womenGÇÖs tennis team continues its
non-conference portion of the schedule with three matches in three
days beginning Friday with a road match up with Air Force at 4
p.m.
On Saturday, January 31, the Buffaloes (1-0) will host former Big
12 Conference rival Kansas State in the spring home opener at the
Millennium Hotel Harvest House bubble at 4 p.m.
K-State (2-1) is on a two-match swing of the Centennial state as
they take on Air Force on Sunday in Colorado Springs. The Wildcats,
the No. 66 nationally ranked team has defeated Northern Iowa and
No. 74 UC Irvine, then lost to top-ranked UCLA.
Then on Sunday, the Buffaloes travel to in-state rival Colorado
State for a 2 p.m. start.
The three matches in three days is a program first since 2009.
CU lost to then-No. 5 Baylor in a match moved to Norman,
Okla., site of the Big 12 Conference Tennis Championships.
After the originally scheduled match with Baylor was postponed in
Boulder due to inclement weather, CU/Baylor played their makeup
match the day before the conference tournament was to begin.
The following day, the Buffaloes opened the conference tournament
defeating Kansas State, 4-0, then on day three, fell to then-No. 61
Nebraska, 4-0.
Colorado is 1-0 on the young season after shutting out Northern
Colorado, 7-0 last Saturday in Greeley.
CU at Air Force (Jan. 30)
GÇó CU defeated the
Falcons in Boulder last season, 4-1.
GÇó The Buffaloes won the doubles point, then received singles wins
from Julyette Steur, Alex Aiello at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots,
respectively; Nuria Orme+¦o Ruiz also won at No. 4, to clinch the
match.
GÇó CU leads the all-time series, 14-1.
CU vs. Kansas State (Jan. 31)
GÇó The Wildcats
defeated CU in Manhattan last year (Feb. 8), 4-1.
GÇó K-State was the No. 53 nationally ranked team last season.
GÇó CU lost the doubles point and Alex Aiello defeated Iva Bago at
No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-3 claimed CUGÇÖs lone singles point.
GÇó Buffs lead the all-time series, 24-12.
GÇó The Wildcats have won the last two matches in the series.
CU at Colorado State (Feb. 1)
GÇó CU blanked
its in-state rival, 7-0 in Boulder last season, shutting out the
Rams for the first time since 1997.
GÇó The Buffs clinched the doubles point, then won all six singles
positions.
GÇó CU leads Colorado State, 28-0 all-time.
Northern Colorado Review
GÇó CU defeated the
Bears, 7-0 on Jan. 24 in Greeley. CU has now won 19-straight in the
series and has dominated their in-state foe holding a commanding
31-2 advantage all-time. The match was the first time the two
schools played in Greeley since 1993.
GÇó Nuria Orme+¦o Ruiz/Kyra Wojcik and Alex Aiello/Ashley Tiefel
teamed up to claim the doubles point. In singles, Tina Bokhua,
Nuria Orme+¦o Ruiz, and Julyette Steur each won their respective
singles matches at the top three singles positions. Steur clinched
the team win for her 50th career singles victory. Wojcik also
won in straight sets at No. 5, as did Tiefel at No. 6.
GÇó Aiello won her 26th career tally, Orme+¦o Ruiz her 25th, and
Tiefel secured her 24th.
GÇó Only home match for the Buffaloes during the opening month of the
season. CU returns home to play New Mexico (Feb. 15), Nevada
(Feb. 21) and Kansas (Feb. 22) for its lone three home matches
during the month of February.
GÇó Dating back to last fall season, Alex Aiello has won four of her
last five singles matches; Tina Bokhua has won five of six singles
matches, Nuria Orme+¦o Ruiz has won three straight; Julyette Steur
is three of four; Ashley Tiefel two of three; Kyra Wojcik four of
five.
