Zika Wins Silver For Overall Competition At WUG - University of Colorado Athletics

GRANADA, SpainGÇöJunior Adam Zika, captain of the menGÇÖs alpine team at the University of Colorado, became the first menGÇÖs skier in CU history to win a medal, earning the silver medal for the Overall Competition at the 27th World University Games, wrapping up a successful completion for the Buffs.

Zika accumulated the second most points of all menGÇÖs alpine skiers across four races throughout the games. He is the second Buff to win a medal at the games joining Thea Grosvold, who won a Gold Medal in the slalom on Friday.

On top of becoming the first menGÇÖs skier in CU history to medal, Zika is just the fifth overall to do so and sixth overall medal, including the second silver medal. He joins Grosvold, former Buffs Erika Hogan, who won silver in the slalom in 2003, Katie Hartman, who won gold in the Super G in 2011, and Erika Ghent, who won a silver in the Super Combined and gold in the Overall Competition, also in 2011.

Zika scored 344 points in the four races, earning 96 points for an eighth place finish in the Super Combined. He was also 13th in SaturdayGÇÖs slalom race, earning 88 points, 20th in the Super G (81) and 22nd in the giant slalom (79). SwitzerlandGÇÖs Sandro Boner won the Gold Medal with 414 points, while ItalyGÇÖs Michaelangelo Tentori was third with 319 points. Boner won the Alpine Combined Gold while Tentori won both the Super G and GS Gold Medals.

SaturdayGÇÖs menGÇÖs slalom races were the final races of the Games, ZikaGÇÖs 13th place finish was the best of the four Buffs racing. Roger Carry and Cameron Smith both didnGÇÖt finish their first run and Kasper Hietanen didnGÇÖt finish his second run. Only 28 of the 92 competitors finished the race.

The Buffs will return back to the United States next week and prepare for a whirlwind end to the collegiate season. CU travels to Anchroage, Alaska for the Seawolf Invitational followed immediately by the RMISA Championships to close out February. Then a week later the Buffs will head to Lake Placid for the 2015 NCAA Championships, hosted by St. Lawrence University March 11-14.
