Tennis Travels to LA, Takes On Ranked Programs

BOULDER GÇô The University of Colorado womenGÇÖs
tennis team will be make its Pac-12 Network debut this Friday,
April 10 taking on the No. 4 nationally ranked UCLA Bruins at 12:30
p.m. (MDT).
The televised match will be on the Pac-12 Mountain and Pac-12 Los
Angeles stations. Colorado Comcast residents can watch the
match on Pac-12 Mountain 430 (840HD).
The singles portion of FridayGÇÖs match will be covered live by the
Pac-12 Networks (singles only) at 2 p.m. (MDT). Paul
Sunderland (play-by-play) and former UCLA standout Mark Knowles
(analyst) will be calling the action.
The Buffaloes (11-8, 1-6 Pac-12) have won two straight and are also
ranked themselves at No. 65 in the country. CU is coming off
back-to-back 4-3 victories at Denver (April 3) and Washington State
(March 29).
Sophomore Nuria Orme+¦o Ruiz enters FridayGÇÖs match on a four-match
winning streak and leads the team in season victories with
17. The Barcelona, Spain native along with senior teammate
Ashley Tiefel lead the Buffaloes in conference wins with three
each. Senior Julyette Steur and junior Alex Aiello each have
16 wins for the season.
UCLA, winners of five straight matches, are the NCAA defending
national champion and begin conference play this weekend with a
16-3 record and 6-1 mark in the conference.
The Bruins are represented in the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA) national rankings with a pair of doubles teams
(No. 4 Catherine Harrison/Kyle McPhillips; No. 18 Robin
Anderson/Jennifer Brady). In singles, UCLA have a quartet in
the top 50 (No. 1 Anderson, No. 17 Chanelle Van Nguyen, No. 29
McPhillips, No. 50 Brady).
UCLA leads the all-time series with CU, holding a 4-0 advantage
dating back to 1982. The Bruins are 3-0 in Pac-12 play.
On Saturday, CU will take on the No. 1 ranked Trojans at 1 p.m.
(MDT). USC has won eight straight and are 18-2 overall, 7-0
in the Pac-12. The Trojans are the lone undefeated team in
the conference standings.
Just like its crosstown rivals, USC is also well-represented among
the ITA singles and doubles rankings. Entering this weekGÇÖs play,
the Trojans boast a trio of doubles tandems (No. 21 Zo+½
Katz/Sabrina Santamaria, No. 23 Zo+½ Scandalis/Giuliana Olmos, No.
35 Katz/Gabriella DeSimone); and a singles quintet (No. 13 Olmos,
No. 22 Santamaria, No. 58 Scandalis, No. 71 Madison Westby,
No. 72 Gabby Smith).
USC also leads the all-time series with CU, 7-0 dating back to
1979. The Trojans are 3-0 in the Pac-12 against CU.
Colorado returns home for its final match of the spring season next
Saturday, April 18 taking on No. 59 Utah. The match begins at 11
a.m. at the South Campus Courts.
