CU Student-Athletes Enjoy Another Solid Semester

BOULDER GÇö Data compiled from the recently completed spring semester at the University of Colorado revealed that the schoolGÇÖs 336 student-athletes recorded the second highest grade point average for a spring term, one of many accomplishments overall by those comprising CUGÇÖs 17 intercollegiate athletic programs.
The average GPA for the spring was 2.901, second only to a 2.935 number that was posted back in the spring of 2012. The cumulative grade point was an even healthier 2.930, third-highest on record (and just .001 behind the next-best mark of 2.931 set last fall).
All nine womenGÇÖs teams (indoor and outdoor track are combined) recorded semester GPAGÇÖs higher than 3.0 (actually all were 3.066 or better, including seven over 3.2), the first time this has happened. A record 11 teams attained the 3.0 level including the menGÇÖs cross country and ski programs, and nine teams had a higher term grade point than their cumulative numbers going into the semester, thus raising their overall GPAGÇÖs. In all, 10 programs boast cumulative grade points above 3.0.
GÇ£This success is the result of hard work by many, but first and foremost the student-athletes,GÇ¥ said Kris Livingston, CUGÇÖs Associate Athletic Director for Student Success. GÇ£They have embraced the challenges of combining academics and athletics at the Division I level, which is no easy task. It involves commitment, dedication and sacrifices to succeed in both.GÇ¥
For the fall semester, 242 student-athletes owned grade points over 2.5 (72 percent), 166 over 3.0 (49%, the second-highest percentage ever) and 82 over 3.5 (24%, matching the best); 10 student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 semesters. Overall, cumulatively speaking, 257 students are at or above 2.50 (76%), with 149 at 3.0 or higher (44%) and 71 at or eclipsing 3.50 (21%); the latter also matched the previous best percentage while the former pair are the second-highest recorded since information started being compiled for all sports in 1996.
The womenGÇÖs cross country team posted the best term (3.498), just edging the womenGÇÖs ski team (3.483), though the skiers own the top cumulative number at 3.575. The women skiers also have 28 straight semesters with a 3.0 or better (most considerably higher at that), while the womenGÇÖs cross country squad has 22 consecutive semesters over 3.0. The womenGÇÖs golf team also was above a 3.4, coming in at 3.406, its highest GPA ever for a single term.
WomenGÇÖs cross country also had the largest gain between the fall and spring terms, jumping from 3.211 to its 3.498 average, or .287.
The football team recorded its ninth straight term at 2.5 or above, and have its third-best cumulative GPA (2.65) since its numbers were first compiled in 1992. ItGÇÖs high of 2.703 was attained after last semester, which had nine graduates no longer included in the survey.
