Sutherland Earns All-America Status

EUGENE, Ore. GÇô Senior Sara Sutherland raced to a
third place finish in a very talented pool of 1,500-meter runners
at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday
afternoon to earn herself first team All-America status.
Sutherland recorded a personal best time of 4 minutes, 13.48
seconds for the bronze in the race, surpassing her previous best of
4:13.56 from the Pac-12 Championships. This was the third time this
season that Sutherland has run 4:13. She also ran 4:13.95 at the
NCAA West Preliminary Championships.
The Dallas, Texas native ran a very smart and tactical race, moving
up steadily in a well-paced race. Sutherland was sixth overall
after 700 meters and pulled ahead of three more runners in the next
200 meters to get into third.
The top two, Shelby Houlihan (Arizona State) and Rhianwedd Price (Mississippi State), along with Sutherland pulled away from the rest of the field entering the bell lap. With 250 meters left, Houlihan and Price took off, but Sutherland kept a good 10-15 meters between her and the rest of the field to secure her third place finish. Price won in 4:09.56, while Houlihan was second in 4:09.67.
