Colorado-BYU Notes
BYU narrows Colorado’s overall lead in the series to 17-7 and takes over the lead in Provo at 7-6. This was Colorado’s first game at BYU since Dec. 17, 1955.
Colorado trailed at the half for the fourth straight game (2-2) and fifth time overall (2-3) this season.
BYU made eight of its first 10 shots and led by as many as eight in the first half (24-16). The Cougars made just eight of their final 23 of the period as the Buffaloes used a late 14-7 run to tie the game at 38-38 before BYU eventually took a 40-38 lead at the break.
After Colorado’s Thomas Akyazili hit his first 3-pointer of the season to give the Buffaloes a 61-58 lead with 8:53 remaining, the Buffaloes went 8:09 without another made field goal, scoring only seven points on free throws during that span. BYU finished the game on a 21-10 run after Akyazili’s 3-pointer.
Colorado’s bench scored 16 points, compared to just four in the win over Xavier. The Buffaloes had 11 bench points in the first half alone.
Derrick White (21 points, 7-of-12 FG) reached the 20-point mark for the second straight game and third time in a Colorado uniform. Averaged 22 points in two games this week hitting 16-of-29 from the field (.552)
George King (14 points, 12 rebounds) recorded his fourth double-double of the season and the fifth of his career. It’s his second straight double-double after his 16-point, 10-rebound effort vs. Xavier. His four double-doubles this season have come in the last seven games. King had back-to-back double-doubles vs. Texas and Notre Dame.
Thomas Akyazili (3 points, 4 assists, 2 steals) made his first 3-pointer of the season in the second half snapping an 0-for-11 slump. Third game with four or more assists this year and first since the win over Seattle U.
Lucas Siewert (5 points, 2-of-3 FG) scored for the first time in five games. Hit a 3-pointer in the first half breaking an 0-for-7 streak from downtown which stretched back to the Texas game.
Wesley Gordon (4 assists, 3 blocks) has nine assists over the last two games; three of his four came in the first half. His three blocked shots tied his own team season-high (Colorado State).
Xavier Johnson (17 points, 5 rebounds) scored in double-digits for the third straight game, four of the last five and seven overall. He is averaging 18 points over the last three outings. He moved past CU Hall of Famer Burdette Haldorson (1952-55) for 24th on CU’s all-time scoring list, now with 1,140. Johnson also moved into 22nd in career rebounds at 577, passing Scott Wilke who had 576 from 1984-88.
