QUICKLY The Buffs have won all three coin tosses this season and have deferred each time … CU is now 10-22 in games played in the Eastern Time Zone (8-16 regular season, 2-6 bowl) … Today marked the fifth time CU has played before 100,000-plus, with the 110,042 the largest of the five (attendance records on page 253 of CU’s media guide; it was the ninth time a team from the state of Colorado has played before a six-figure crowd: Air Force did at Michigan in 2012 and at Tennessee in 2006; the Broncos did in SB XXI in Pasadena; and CSU did at Alabama in 2013) … CU has lost 23 straight against ranked teams, and 27 straight road games against ranked opponents (last win over Kansas in 2009, last road win at UCLA in 2002) … OT Aaron Haigler made his first career start, doing so on the right side … In the first half, the teams combined to go 1-of-14 on third down, gaining 4 net yards … CU scored 28 points today after scoring 30 in its first three trips here (0-31 in 1974, 27-26 in 1994, 3-27 in 1997).
Offense Notes … Sefo Liufau engineered 11 drives before leaving with the ankle injury (46 plays, 307 yards); Steven Montez was in for six drives (20 plays, 18 yards); Jordan Gehrke in for one play (1 yard) when Montez’ helmet was knocked off … CU was 7-of-9 on second downs in the first quarter, all conversions six yards or longer …
Defense … Colorado surrendered 397 yards on defense, 184 coming on five plays … the Buffs have allowed just 718 in three games, still only 239.3 per; CU has allowed 359 on the ground and 359 through the air. OLB Derek McCartney’s 18-yard fumble return for a touchdown as CU’s first since Samson Kafovalu returned one 33 yards for a score last year at UCLA.
INDIVIDUAL LINER NOTES
QB Sefo Liufau (25-16-0, 246, 3 TD, 186.3 rating; 8-4 rushing; 1-14 receiving). He surpassed the 8,000-yard mark in passing yards (8,165 yards) and has now thrown 89 straight passes without an interception (76 this season). Liufau has now caught a pass in every year of his career (5-82, 16.4 per, 1 TD). He left the game early in the third quarter with an ankle sprain.
WR Shay Fields (4-99, 1 TD). He moved into 12th place in all-time receiving yards (1,240), and became the 14th player in school history to record 100 career receptions (he ended the day with 101). He also had his seventh career play (all receptions) of 50 yards or longer:
