Tutor Position/Become A Tutor

Position Description

Herbst Academic Center subject tutors provide one-on-one and occasional small group tutoring to student-athletes to assist them in understanding content-specific material by utilizing specialized backgrounds for which they are hired.  Tutors assist student-athletes in improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis to perform tasks such as reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test questions, formulating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems.  Tutoring is meant to be a supplement to classroom teaching.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend mandatory tutor training before each term
  • Facilitate student’s learning of the concepts and methods required to tackle course assignments and assessments
  • Submit tutor session feedback reports after each tutoring appointment
  • Complete all administrative and training-related tasks in a timely manner
  • Be punctual for all scheduled tutoring sessions
  • Follow confidentiality and ethical guidelines and policies at all times
  • Tutoring sessions are typically 1 hour long
  • Tutors are expected to commit to a full term inclusive of finals week
  • Meet with Tutor Coordinator as needed

Qualifications

  • Received an A or B in the course scheduled to tutor (verified through submission of transcripts in interview)
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Prior enrollment in the course
  • Ability to adapt tutoring style to assist student-athletes in the learning process
  • Effective communicator
