Colorado Head Coach Mike MacIntyre
General
“I was really excited about how hard our guys played. We started out fast and then we kind of stalled. We had some opportunities to score more points and let them hang around. But I was really proud of our defense and our special teams. I’m proud of the way our offense got us off to a fast start, then we just played good, hard-nosed football. We’ll look at this tape and we’ll improve. There’s always some rust in that first game and you could kind of see it, but we will find a way to fix that and move on to next week.”
On Defensive Assistants
“D.J. [Eliot], ShaDon [Brown], Ross Els, Jim Jeffcoat, Chidera [Uzo-Diribe], Matt Daniels, and Nate Taye, our quality control guy, have all done a phenomenal job with our defensive guys. I always say, our kids take their coaching really well. We’ve developed a culture of defense, we’ve recruited well for it, we’ve redshirted guys, we’ve gotten junior college guys, we know what we want. I always tell them ‘players make plays, players win games’. We coach them, but when they step out there they have to go make plays. We can talk about all the coaching we want, but if we recruit right, develop them right, coach them right, and give them the confidence to go play, their athletic ability and understanding takes over. From everything that I’ve heard, I don’t think anybody expected us to be able to tackle anybody, but those kids played hard and I’m really proud of them.”
On What Caused The Offense To Stall
“We made a few mistakes here and there, the offensive line jumping offsides, a missed block or a missed read, those kinds of things. We’ll see that on film, we’ll correct it, and we’ll move on. We will be an explosive offense. Someday this group will really be explosive, and I can’t wait until they do it. Hopefully it’s next Saturday.”
On Momentum After Phillip Lindsay’s First Touchdown
“It meant a lot. Phil is a heck of a runner and we were able to bust him through there. Last year people stopped catching him, this year they won’t catch him either. He has that extra gear, he’s a little faster, a little stronger. Michael Adkins came in and did some good things, I’ve been pleased with Michael Adkins since camp. Beau Bisharat has done really well. I’m excited about our running backs.”
On CSU Pass Rush in Second Half
“(Steven Montez) was holding it a little bit. We’ll learn from that and he’ll see where he’s got to go with the ball to get it out of his hands a little quicker. There was one sack where we should’ve changed the protection. They had all year to study us too, and we improved on some things, they did a good job having a game under their belt. (CSU) is much better on defense, they’re older, they’re experienced, they’re going to lose a lot of guys too off that defense after this year. Marty (English) has done a good job coaching them, I told him after the game that I was really impressed by how much they’ve improved defensively.”
On Officiating
“Calls can go either way all the time. I’ll watch it on film. You never complain about officiating. We have a quote on the walls at CU: ‘No excuses. No regrets.’ You have to just keep playing.”
On Steven Montez’s First Game As Permanent Starter
“Steven did a good job. He’s been hearing about it all year, he’s been anxious about playing. As he keeps growing, and keeps doing it, and keeps understanding it, and we keep improving, we’ll be a really good offense.”
On Performance From Young Defensive Players
“They’re very talented. They’re going to play hard and keep going. They made some mistakes tonight, but they all kept battling. Dante Sparaco had a sack, he’s a true freshman. (Jacob) Callier had a sack, he’s a true freshman. Redshirt freshman Trey (Udoffia) had two pass breakups. They’ll keep getting better, they’ll improve from this week to next week. The biggest jump you have is from the first week to the second week with any team. They’ll go watch film, they’ll understand the intensity of the game, and practice is practice. Hopefully they will learn from that and we can reach the goals we want to reach.”
On Play From Secondary And Redshirt Freshman Cornerback Trey Udoffia
“We’re going to play aggressive, we’re going to play tough, we’re going to make teams struggle passing. (Trey Udoffia) really did a good job to keep fighting. He knew just like all 73,000 people knew that they were going to throw at #8, and he’s going to start to get that confidence. I was glad to see him get some pass breakups, and he made a great play down there on that fourth down play. He’s learning how to run with the guys. Those are good receivers and a good quarterback, they’ve been putting up 60-points a game for the last seven games and have been throwing on people at will, and I thought our young guys did a good job.”
On Play Of Shay Fields and Bryce Bobo
“Bryce and Shay had a really good game out there. I always tease Bryce that he has the longest 33-yard run to gain no yards. I told him to go straight up field and he said, ‘I’ve got to make something happen.’ Make something happen by going up field. He did really well and Shay did a good job. Steven [Montez] did a good job in getting the ball to them in what they were doing. He saw it and got it out there. Steven has a really quick release. We’ll look on film to see if we could have went to the other side sometimes and could have gotten some double moves on the other side. That’s understanding our matchups. We’ll be better with that going into our next game.

We’ll be better with that going into our next game.
On the Isaiah Oliver – Michael Gallup Matchup
“That was worth the price of admission, it sure was. Gallup’s a heck of a player and Oliver’s a heck of a player. It was fun to watch. The one long catch they had, we had a miscommunication. But, that was a good job by then on what they did on the routes.”
On Steven Montez’s Mobility
“That’s his added dimension he’s able to bring. He made that throw to Shay [Fields] and he hit Shay on another one, that was a big first down. That was a huge play for us. Another big play for us was when we were backed up on our eight-yard line and he scrambles out and hits Jay [MacIntyre] on the sideline. That got us out of a hole. We didn’t score on that, but they could have gone right down there and scored because they would have had the ball on the 45-yard line going in with momentum. To me, that was a momentum-changing play.”
On Thought Process Rotating Three Kickers
“Kickers. All of them have done a good job and we just wanted to see how it went. I think they’ve got good legs. I think, for the most part, we did the right thing on it and we’ll just keep working with them.”
On Message To Team Postgame
“You’re either getting better or you’re getting worse, nothing stays the same. We’re going to go back, look what we’ve done and improve. We’ve got a lofty goal ahead of us that I believe we can do. We have to keep pushing ourselves. We’ll do that. We’ll be a much more improved team next week. I’m excited about what this team can do.”
On Passing of Friend Will Rutledge
“A very good friend of mine passed away on Wednesday, Will Rutledge, Jerry Rutledge’s brother. He battled pancreatic cancer. He had belief and faith in Christ. He was supposed to live 60 days and he lived for 14 months. He sat in the box with my wife at last year’s game and he was supposed to be here this year and he passed away Wednesday. I know he’s watching from above and cheering us on. I want to honor Will and how he lived his life and his Christian example.“
Colorado Players
C Jonathan Huckins
ON THE TEMPO OF TONIGHT’S GAME --“I think we started strong as y’all can see and we kind of just simmered off toward the end and we have to just keep our momentum high. We have to play and adjust to how they’re adjusting to us. I think that’s a big thing for us, coming out in the second half and putting out more points in the second half.”ON HOW HURRICANE HARVEY AFFECTED HIS FAMILY --“It was a little scary when I was here and all of the category four stuff started happening. Both of my parents’ flights got cancelled so they weren’t able to come to the game which is upsetting. My mom and my dad both evacuated. My dad lives near Houston so he probably got the worst of it. I’m praying for them and they’re all fine which is most important. The home situation, my dad left his but his is downtown so he doesn’t really know what the status of his house is but my brother got six inches and my mom didn’t get anything so that was good. It wasn’t tough to focus on football. Me and my brother both keep in contact. He’s another athlete, he played lacrosse. So he helped me through. I always talk to him and he really helped me out through that issue.”
ON WAYS THAT OFFENSIVE LINE NEEDS TO IMPROVE --“I think the biggest thing, especially for the offensive line is communication. That obviously starts with me. I have to help communicate better, I have to get people in the right spot faster. I think we have to move at a faster tempo next game as well. I think we simmered off in the second half and we could have pushed it if we went a little faster.”
ON RUNNING GAME --“I’m an offensive lineman, I’d like to run the ball every play and I know Phil [Lindsay] would like that as well. We just have to keep building off of what we did this game. We started with some good holes because we got going fast so we just have to settle down and move faster and move ‘Folsom fast’ like we always do.”
WR Shay Fields
ON THE OFFENSE– “We did some good things in the first half. We started off fast but second half we got into a little bit of trouble, we couldn’t execute as well. We just need to fix that.”ON MONTEZ’S ABILITY -- “That’s the player he is. He has that cannon for an arm and then we kind of make eye contact. That contact told me to go and that he could throw it way out there. That’s just one of the unique talents that he has. No knock to Sefo (Liufau), he scrambled too. But Montez, we feel he’s more mobile. He has that cannon, he can throw on the run and that’s one of his unique talents. With this team, with the receivers and quarterback that we have, we feel that we can make plays scrambling also.”
ON DEFENSIVE PRESSURE --“They play cover one, they have one safety. They put some pressure on us, we couldn’t execute as well. That’s just one of the things we have to focus on in practice, getting that pressure down and executing when we have to.”
ON HIS TOUCHDOWN -- “That was the mindset, make them come up and if we feel like we can take a shot, take a shot.”
LB Drew Lewis
ON HIS FIRST START -- “It was exciting. A lot of nervous energy at first, trying to get a feel for things and get my feet wet. I started off pretty well, tweaked some things at the end but overall I feel like I played pretty well. Our coaches toward the second half wanted to make some changes, tweak some things for me. We made that work. We’re going to continue game planning next week and see what happens. It was a lot of fun.”ON LINEBACKERS COACH ROSS ELS --“He really prepped us well. Him and Coach [D.J.] Eliot and Coach [ShaDon] Brown, they all are on the same page. They’re really good at communicating with us and they got us really well prepared for this game.”
ON DEFENSIVE FOCUS -- “We were focusing on a couple of different things. They had a lot of tendencies, we tried to stop that. They did different things with their fullbacks and took a lot of shots downfield and we were ready for that. As a defense we communicated extremely well so we were ready for almost anything they threw at us.”
ON THE DEFENSIVE LINE’S PLAY -- “They did excellent all game and I was talking to them all game trying to hype them up because they’re the ones that make plays for us. I was congratulating them and we were both telling each other good job. I’m definitely satisfied with how they’re doing.”
ON MINDSET GOING INTO THIS GAME --“As a defense we were feeling really good, As a whole team and the coaching staff, we didn’t really know what to expect. Obviously there are some naysayers and some doubters who didn’t know how we were going to play with half the defense graduating. I feel like I even came out and surprised myself and we surprised a lot of people being able to compete and stepping up to how the starters last year played.”
ON HIS AND RICK GAMBOA’S TEAMWORK -- “Throughout the game plan lasts week, I was relying on him a little bit. Then we came out here and it got extremely loud when we were playing and it got difficult to communicate which forced me to think on my feet a little bit. I feel like I was able to really understand what was going on. I relied on him a little bit but not as much as I anticipated.”
LB Rick Gamboa
ON HAVING CONFIDENCE IN DEFENSE- “All offseason, basically since last season we’ve just been hearing about the offense, and all the guys defensively that we lost, and I think that’s one thing that pushed us in the offseason. Knowing that if we wanted to win, we knew the defense would have to play good in games, and that’s kind of something we’ve preached throughout the off season.”ON HOW HE FELT THE COACH ELIOT PREPARED HIM FOR THE MATCHUP-” I think he did a great job with the game plan. He helped us out with a lot of new guys playing for the first time, and I think the fact that he simplified it for us, let us play fast, I think that’s one thing that helped us a lot.”
ON CSU PENALTIES TAKING WIND OUT OF RAMS-“A little bit, but penalties happen all throughout the game, you never know if they’re going to go for your side or the other side. It’s just something that you’ve got to play with.”
ON HOW YOUNGER GUYS STEPPED UP IN THE GAME-“Trey (Udoffia) played big, beginning of the game he had a rough time, but in the second half he came out and he knew he was going to have to make plays here and there, and he made those plays when we needed him. Jake (Callier) is an amazing pass rusher and I think seeing him grow throughout the regular season is going to be something to watch.”
RB Phillip Lindsay
WALKING THROUGH TOUCHDOWN RUN-“I mean, the offensive line did business, and I was patient, followed it, and it hit how it always does in practice. After that, it’s just about getting out, and understanding that scoring is going to help my team, and it’s all about the team. I was glad I was able to do that.”ON IF HE FEELS FASTER THIS YEAR-“Yeah, I definitely worked on strength and speed. I thank coach Drew (Wilson) for that, coach Drew has been a phenomenal weight coach for us and it’s going to show. Throughout this whole season we will continue to get stronger. We’re going to be lifting and we will be able to peak at the right time.”
ON IF HE WAS TOUCHED DURING TOUCHDOWN RUN-“A little bit, but the line did their business up front. I shouldn’t be touched by the defensive linemen, I should be able to make the linebackers, safeties, and corners miss.”
ON IMPORTANCE OF GETTING AN EARLY TOUCHDOWN-“We are a team that thrives off of big plays. Anytime we can get momentum shifting our way, that’s what we want. We’re going to go back to square one, we didn’t score like we wanted to, but it was Montez’s first time as the head man. I’m excited for him, he’s a great quarterback and he’s going to win a lot of games in the Pac-12. We just have to go back to square one and that starts Monday. We’re going to get all the rust off, and get our receivers, because we have some lethal receivers that need to get the ball.”
ON WHY OFFENSE SLOWED DOWN-“We’ve got to go back to watch the film. They brought a couple blitzes that confused us a little bit. Other than that, we’ve just got to go out there and play Colorado football. That’s just one snap and clear when we do make a mistake, and then score points. Get our receivers involved, and get them the ball, take some more shots, and help our defense out. Our defense did a phenomenal job today.”
ON HIS 7TH 100 YARD RUSH GAME-“I’m not really a selfish person like that. I don’t really look into stuff like that, I’m happy to win the game. Anything I can do to help win the game, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m happy that my offensive line did what they did to help me get to where I got today.”
ON HOW IT FEELS TO BEAT CSU 3 YEARS IN A ROW-“it’s a good feeling. To go out my last year playing in the Colorado Rocky Mountain Showdown, against CSU again. It feels pretty good to be able to get the win for myself.”
ON IF HE WAS ABLE TO SOAK IN THE VICTORY-“Yeah, my parents were on the field, so it was a good feeling. My mom cried because that’s what moms do when they’re proud of their sons. She has five kids, five hardheaded kids. Three boys and two girls.”
ON PLAYING HIS LITTLE BROTHER-“It’s exciting, my little brother’s a bad dude. I’m excited to be able to watch him run, and he’s excited to be able to play me. We never got to play with each other because the time that we were, he hurt his knee and then I hurt my knee the next year. Maybe playing against each other we will have better luck, and we will have a lot of family members there. We might have a family barbeque after.”
QB Steven Montez
ON LAST YEAR’S EXPERIENCE HELPING HIM THIS YEAR“Yeah definitely, I think the experience from last year helped me out a lot today. I mean there was some stuff from games last year that I saw tonight that helped me out because I knew what to do with it. That’s pretty much it, every game is new, we played well tonight, the defense played phenomenal so I think this season is going to be good. We have some momentum going into next week for Texas State.”
ON HIS TOUCHDOWN PASS TO SHAY FIELDS-“I just felt a little pressure and got out of the pocket, spun out. I was just kind of scanning the field and I knew I had a bunch of time. I was just kind of hitching back there, and then I saw Shay and I kind of just looked at him and was like just turn up the field. Sure enough he went and I tossed it up to him and scored a touchdown.”
ON HIS GROWTH AS A QUARTERBACK-“I mean there’s still a lot to learn for me and a ton to learn for the offense. My high school coach used to always tell me it’s tough to win, and so any win you get is a blessing. That’s what I’m taking it as tonight, it’s a blessing and we ended up leaving with a victory.”
ON THE OFFENSE STALLING OUT-“I’m not really sure if I could tell you, to be honest. I think if I had to answer that we would have changed something and probably fixed it. So I really couldn’t tell you. We are going to have to go watch the film, and just clean up our mistakes and see what we have to do for next week.”
ON WHAT COLORADO STATE DID TO SLOW HIM DOWN-“I mean they are a great defense. They played really well on defense today and that’s pretty much what it was. I mean we needed to get to some different things on offense. So we’ll just take that and like I said earlier we are going to watch the film and make some improvements on offense.”
ON HIS ABILITY TO ROLL OUT OF THE POCKET-“I have been doing that since high school, since sophomore year. I feel very comfortable outside of the pocket, running around and just making plays. I mean that’s kind of my game, that’s kind of how I play and that’s really the fun part of football for me is getting outside of the pocket and going to make things happen.”
ON WHO HE REACHED OUT TO PRESEASON-“I mean really the only people that I talked to for advice during the offseason was Coach Mac and Coach Chev, and obviously my father. He’s helped me out a whole bunch, not only mentally but physically with the game. Just some of the technique stuff, he played the position, he played the game at a high level so yeah just those men right there have been helping me out a lot and mentoring me. And also Sefo [Liufau], Sefo sent me a text before the game telling me good luck and everybody knows how much I appreciate Sefo. He’s been a mentor for me and like an older brother to me so that was real nice to hear from him.”
ON HIS ABILITY AS A RUNNER-“Yeah I mean hopefully I just, I like to make a few plays with my legs when I can. When they call plays for me I just try to do things with the ball and that’s pretty much it. Other than that I like to give the ball to the playmakers on the outside and the perimeter, all the receivers and obviously you guys know Phillip Lindsay is a freak when he gets the ball in his hands so he’ll make a lot of plays happen this year.”
CB Trey Udoffia
ON FIRST GAME JITTERS - “I got all of my first game jitters out, got a lot more confidence after talking to Afolabi [Laguda] and Isaiah [Oliver] in the locker room. Nick [Fisher] was also helping me out all game and keeping me confident. Once I got past the nerves, I just did me and played hard and that’s what I did.”ON DEFENSIVE STRENGTH AND AGE --“We’re taught to get into the receivers faces and as a defense we just want to make a statement that defense is still here and the offense doesn’t have to carry us all season. I think we proved that tonight. We have a lot of veterans in the secondary and they’re counting on me because I know a lot of teams are going to be throwing my way. I have to keep my head on straight and keep my eyes down. Having a performance like this was really big for us and me especially.”
ON HIS PICK -- “It felt good. I wish it could have happened earlier but I’m not going to complain about getting a pick. That’s a play that we practice a lot during the week so it turned out well for us.”
DB Isaiah Oliver
ON HIS MATCHUP WITH MICHAEL GALLUP-“Oh yeah most definitely, he’s a great receiver. One of the best receivers I’ve faced in college football so he was a great test for myself and for him so going against him all game made us both better so it was a lot of fun.”ON HOW WELL TREY UDOFFIA PLAYED -“Oh he played great, I mean for his first start in college football I know he was nervous before the game, talking to me about it and everything so he got his confidence up after the first half and just kept on playing great football so he’s going to be huge for us going forward, and his confidence in himself.”
ON HOW DJ ELIOT AFFECTED THEIR GAMEPLAN -“Yeah I mean I think he did a tremendous job and he’s always watching film, he knows everything about the defense, everything about CSU’s offense so he knew what was coming before it happened. He was able to prepare us to do the same thing so we knew what they were going to run almost every single play so that is going to help how it looked on the field as well so I think he did a great job and all the defensive coaches did a great job. Coach Brown and Coach Els as well. I think we just played a great game as a whole defense.”
ON WHAT MADE MICHAEL GALLUP SO DIFFICULT -“Personally I feel it’s his size in combination with his speed, so he’s a bigger receiver, bigger than most receivers in the Pac-12 and he can run as well. He does a great job using his hands and trying to use his big body to get in front of DBs like that so he has a bright future ahead of him.”
ON HOW PRESURE ON NICK STEVENS HELPED HIM -“Oh it could make all the difference in the world, I mean if you get a good pass rush on every passing play, you don’t have to cover for so long. So having those guys play as well as they did, made it a lot easier on the secondary as a whole. We only have to cover for three or four seconds, I mean you could cover just about anybody so hopefully we can keep that up all year and I think we can have a great year.”
ON INFLUENCE OF CHIDOBE AWUZIE AND TEDRIC THOMPSON-“Oh I’m sure they are very proud and I know they were probably nervous watching the game just as nervous as us. I am sure they are proud of us, they know how hard we work to get here, while they were here and while they were gone so I know that they are just happy for us that we played as well as we did.”
ON THE DEFENSE BEING STRONG DESPITE THE LOSS OF KEY PLAYERS-“Oh I think it does a great job for our confidence in ourselves as a defense, I mean going through the whole offseason, hearing about how many guys we lost and how we’re not going to be as good as we were and this and that so being able to come out here and show the world that we are ready to play every single week. I feel like it is going to do wonders for our confidence.”
OLB Jacob Callier
ON FIRST GAME JITTERS - “It was a great experience for me. I got my first game jitters out so next game hopefully I’ll be better. I most definitely have to thank my teammates for the communication, being at the right place at the right time. When I’m out there I want to be able to get those sacks.”ON DEFENSIVE COMMUNICATION --“That was our biggest emphasis going into this game, getting everyone on the same page and communication. Like I said before, if all 11 guys are on the same page, we can’t be wrong. That was our biggest thing going into the game. I see no challenges. We have so much talent and so much opportunity to get better every week and every day. Hopefully this is becoming a case of ‘defense wins championships.’”
ON IMPACTING THE PASSING GAME -- “Coming in, that was my biggest thing. I knew that if I could add anything anywhere, it’d be to the pass rush. That’s what I pride myself on, pass rushing.”
ON HIS SACK -- “The first series, my first play I got in the back field and I got spun around and I hit the quarterback with my back which could have been a sack. But I got those jitters out and came back with a sack so it’s good.”
