Colorado Head Coach Mike MacIntyre
General
“[Head Coach] Jon Smith and Oregon State really battled well, came back from behind and beat us. That was a tough loss to say the least. I’ll take any questions at this time.”
On This Being One Of The Worst Losses In His Time At Colorado
“I would say it was an extremely bad loss, no doubt about it. It was one we should have won because we were up. We should’ve put it away and didn’t. It is extremely tough, no doubt.”
On Losing The Lead In The Second Half
“We were rolling. I guess the wheels just rolled right off. We just didn’t play well enough. They made some plays and we didn’t there at the end. I thought it was great resiliency blocking the extra point. I thought that showed a lot of fight but we didn’t get it done in overtime. I tip my hat off to them making plays. They were throwing the ball on us pretty well to say the least. We couldn’t come up with a play when we needed to and they did time after time.”
On When He Felt The Game Slipping Away
“We got up 31-3 and they got went down and scored there. I think they ran a fade on a fourth down play. That gave them some momentum. We didn’t sniff the end zone again. The blocked field goal was tough. That would’ve gave us a little bit of room there. It would’ve been a little bit tougher for them to tie it at the end. We blocked the extra point but they would’ve been down more points. That was tough on us. Defensively, we didn’t come through like we needed to. Their receivers made some nice catches. We have to play it better. They protected a little bit better. That was a tough thing for us. We lost a couple secondary guys which hurt us a little bit there for a minute with our nickel package. We kind of got that corrected as we went along but that made it a little bit tough for us.”
On The Team’s Confidence Level
“I imagine it shook a little bit to be honest. We had them 31 to 3 with 13 minutes to go in the third quarter. We definitely should’ve won the football game and we didn’t. What we have to do is come back to work tomorrow like you always say. We play Friday and hopefully we play well and get a win. That’s what we have to do. It is definitely a tough loss especially losing at home on homecoming and being up that much is definitely hard.”
On Whether The Team Overlooked Oregon State
“I don’t think we were overlooking them. We had opportunities to go up ever more and we didn’t. I have to go watch the film, which I really don’t want to go watch, but I’m going to go watch it and see what corrections we need to make and the different things we need to do. No. 6 [Oregon State QB Jake Luton] came in and played really well. I thought he did a great job today.”
On Homecoming Week Impacting Team’s Mentality
“I think if we would’ve gotten down early and really looked bad (from the opening kickoff.) Going up 31-3, I don’t think we overlooked them. We got up and maybe we relaxed for a second. I would say that happened. Then we tried to crank it back up and we couldn’t crank it back up. We were doing everything we could to stay with them, stay on them. There was one or two plays that we could’ve made and made it an entirely different game, but we didn’t make them and they did.”
On QB Steven Montez Scrambling
“We were going to run him a little bit because of the way they emptied the box some. He had to scramble a few times. I think he did some good things. But no, we didn’t plan on running him that much.”
On Message To Team With Four Games Left To Play
“I told them you can’t point fingers either way. We’ve got to stay together, work hard and get ready to play a game on Friday night.”
On Reevaluating Goals After Three Straight Losses
“We want to try to get a win every time we come out and we look at each game individually. But you also have other goals that you aspire to and this game hurt that. We definitely want to go win the next one with all we got.”
On Playing Psychologist Afterward
“Of course you do. Hopefully those guys are helping each other too. I saw that. That’s what you want. I guess you could this a gut-wrencher, a tear-your-guts-out type of game. Now they’ve got to find them and put each other back together and go and refocus. Hopefully they come back refocused tomorrow, I believe they will. If they do that we’ll have a good opportunity to go win the next game.”

Oregon State Head Coach Jonathan Smith
On How Much This Win Means To The Team
“It is huge just because in regards to these players. These guys have been working and for them to be able to get over the hump like this; especially in a game being down, continuing to respond, continuing to battle and then getting the reward at the end of the day means a ton.”
“It is huge to win a game. I did feel like our coaches have been doing a great job of continuing to stay positive with these guys and telling them the truth on how they can improve. You also have to give credit to these kids, I mean they know what they are reading out there in regards to what is coming and the opportunities we have had and missed on. So I do think that we have a good vibe around practice and the day-to-day. Like I said, I like our work through the work week and then to come out on top is huge.”
On How It Felt Being Down 31-3
“Not great, obviously being down 31-3 we talked offensively. I thought that (OC) Brian (Lindgren) stayed to his approach, just talked about trying to put some quality football out there and some drives and we did that. Defensively, get a couple of holding them to field goals, a couple of stops and you know we got some momentum going. Then for us to even to respond after scoring right before end of regulation, kick the extra point and you win and we don’t get that, then these kids need to go back out there and get it done. So I am just happy for them.”
On Putting QB Jake Luton In
“It was a little bit touch and go; we did feel like he was available. He was just in such a limited fashion mobility wise, you could kind of see it out there. And so it got to halftime and it was like let’s try to something here and go. In hindsight, 20-20, yeah you would like to put him in earlier but happy for that kid too. He has been through a lot injury wise, disappointing for him in this time and for him to come out and play that well in a game like this, just couldn’t be more happy for him.”
On Their Defense
“There has been some improvement there. They got seven offensively because of the pick six, again we are just tackling and continuing to battle a little bit more and just keep swinging. I just thought again, in the second half with those guys holding them to a couple of kicks, getting a couple of stops was huge.”
On Their Offensive Coordinator, Brian Lindgren
“It is not easy when you get down like that because you try to go and get back in this game, but there is only seven points at a time. So staying consistent through the third quarter and mixing in the run game, he has put together great plans the whole time. I have really been pleased and just fortunate to have him.”
On The Atmosphere of the Locker Room Post Game
“There was a lot of excitement, the kids were fired up. Obviously a lot of hugs with those guys, especially the senior class. They have been through so much. So there is some energy and just pure joy.”

QB Steven Montez
ON THE LOSS- “It is just tough. It is a tough game. Football is not perfect. Nobody on this team is perfect and nobody on this coaching staff is perfect. We just have to stay together and hopefully we will come out as a better team after this.”ON THE IMPORTANCE OF HIS LEADERSHIP AFTER THIS LOSS- “I don’t know how much I want to play into trying to get the guys fired up after this game. The biggest thing right now is we need less guys who want to be the only one talking. We need more guys who want to listen and are going to embrace this brotherhood that we’ve got and hopefully make it stronger after this. These tough moments are either going to bend or break you. With the group of guys, we have, we will end up benefiting from this and getting better from this. It doesn’t feel good right now and it doesn’t taste good right now, but I think at the end of the day we are going to look back on this and it’s going to make us a better football team and make us a tougher football team.”
ON IF THEY LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL- “I think we might have a little bit. Part of that is on me. We have to do a better job of trying to get the tempo going and getting started on offense. We just need to do a better job of finishing drives. It is tough. It is a tough game and a tough situation that we’re put in right now. The biggest thing as of right now and now that the game is over, is to stay together as a unit and not split up into different groups and different cliques, talking bad behind each other’s backs. That isn’t what we need to do right now. We need to stay as a unit and all be on the same page.”
ON MOVING FORWARD- “It is tough. You’ve got guys in this locker room from all over the country. Nobody likes losing. A lot of these guys in high school were winning a ton of games. Then you come here and in a game we were supposed to win against Oregon State, we kind of gave it away. How are guys going to react to that? How are we going to respond? How is the team going to act after a tough loss like this? At the end of the day, this is going to be a learning experience for us. It is going to be a chance for us to get tougher and to get better as a team.”
TB Travon McMillian
ON IF THERE WAS COMPLACENCY ON THE SIDELINE-“I didn’t sense any complacency to be honest with you but we continued to not execute. That second half they started to come back and we just kind of cut it off a little bit. I think Oregon State just had more energy than us out there and they just brought their best game today.”ON IF THE ENERGY WAS OFF THIS GAME-“Yeah I mean we came out flat that second half and I just didn’t think we executed all around the board. I think we just have a lot to improve on and we just have to get our minds right before Arizona now and just keeping moving forward.”
ON IF THE TEAM OVERLOOKED OREGON STATE-“Definitely not, I just think that there were missed opportunities, a lot of missed opportunities. We weren’t supposed to lose this game. We shot ourselves in our foot.”
ON THE DAMAGE DONE SINCE THEIR 5-0 START-“When there’s adversity that strikes you have to be mentally sharp and you can’t be weak about it. You have to go to work the next day and keep moving, you can’t really do anything about it so it’s out of your control.”
ON IF THIS LOSS WILL BE TOUGH TO FORGET ABOUT-“No, I think our team has the right mindset, if we lose we have to move on, we know that. We can’t keep holding on to this and feel sorry for us, we have to keep it moving and get ready for Arizona because they’re gong to give us their best game as well, we have to be ready.”
WR K.D. Nixon
ON HIS DROPPED PASS IN OVERTIME-“You know I dropped it. I let down the team, we lost the game because of me so I’ll live with it and I’ll make up for it.”ON IF THE TEAM WAS UNPREPARED FOR THE GAME-“Honestly I blame it all on myself, you know I should have stepped up. I caught the two touchdowns I had and I have to take the blame for it.”
ON HIS TWO TOUCHDOWN PERFORMANCE-“My best game turned into my worst game.”
ON THE DAMAGE DONE SINCE THEIR 5-0 START-“Honestly, it’s not damage. It’s part of college football, you have to come back tomorrow and just watch the film, correct it, live with it and grow up for the next game.”
OLB Drew Lewis
ON LOCKER ROOM AFTER TOUGH LOSS-“We were all disappointed, obviously. We will just have to watch the film to see what happened. From my perspective, it’s kind of hard to see what’s happening when the offense is on the field because we are trying to make corrections for our defense. Clearly Oregon State came to play today, and they didn’t stop. They slowly crept back into the game and it is disappointing to see that happening. We are going to capitalize on it and then we are going to bounce back.
ON IF TEAM RELAXED WITH BIG LEAD-“I was trying to look around to see what happened. At one point we were up by a lot, and maybe we got a little too comfortable.”
ON DIFFERENCE BETWEEN QUARTERBACKS.-“We tried to account for them. We knew that one of them was good at running and the other one was more of a passer, so we tried to capitalize on that. Their quarterbacks had a great day. They were hitting their targets, so I’ll give them credit for that.”
ON IF DEFENSE WAS AFFECTED BY 4TH QUARTER-“It’s devastating. I think that it shocked all of us a little bit, no one was really expecting that to happen. Obviously, we started out hot, and I wish that we could have finished out the same way.”
ON WHAT HE TELLS TEAM TO KEEP THEM FOCUSED-“I think that all of the plays that people do mess up on, we need to forget. We have to erase that out of our memories before the next snap. There have been too many times for me personally where I was thinking about my mess up through the next play, the next one or two plays. That’s definitely something that’s going to hold us back. We have to pick up communication because we didn’t execute that.”
ON HOW HARD IT IS REGAIN MOMENTUM-“It’s difficult to go from having momentum to losing it, then trying to get that back. I feel like that by the time we started realizing that Oregon State was still in it, it was practically too late for us to try to make up for that. Whether the score is 31-10 or 31-0, we still need to fight like it’s a tie game.”
ON WHAT IS BEST FOR HIM LOOKING FORWARD-“I don’t think that we need to dwell on it too much, but we do need to capitalize where we messed up. Our first practice coming into this upcoming week we have a whole segment for mistakes from the last game that we need to capitalize on. We knew that Oregon state was a team who like running plays on us that work well from other games. They did a great job at scouting that out and seeing what our weaknesses were.”
ON WHAT COACH MACYNTIRE WOULD SAY TO THE TEAM-“He comes up with something new every week, he is kind of unpredictable. I know without a doubt that he will have a plan for us. He is a very smart coach and he is great at fixing mistakes for us. He’ll get on us, I’m not that worried about it. I know he has a plan.”
ON HOW GOALS HAVE CHANGED SINCE LOSING THREE STRAIGHT GAMES-“In a perfect world I’d like to say that we have the same goals as when the season started. That is to focus on the week ahead, and obviously when you lose three games like that, our goals might change a little bit. We just need to find out what went wrong, and fix those errors. Our goal is to just fix what we did wrong, and focus on Arizona.”

ON THE GAME-“I think we played an okay game. We definitely need to come back on Monday, work a lot harder, and get ready for next week.”
ON WHAT CHANGED IN THE SECOND HALF- “They came out and played harder than us in the second half.”
ON WHAT WAS WORKING FOR THE DEFENSE IN THE FIRST HALF-“The whole defense was playing together. The front seven was bringing a lot. We were rushing the quarterback pretty well. In the second half, they kind of schemed on that.”
ON MAKING SURE THIS LOSS DOESN’T CARRY OVER-“We are going to get back on Monday and work hard and get ready for next week. That’s all that we can do.”

DE Mustafa Johnson
ON A PHYSICAL BATTLE UP FRONT –“Definitely, it is always a physical game down in the trenches. Tensions get hot and hands go places you don’t want them. People get mad and it part of the game.”
ON THE DIFFERENCE MADE IN THE SECOND HALF–“I think they made some good adjustments on where we were going to come from with our blitzes. I am not really sure obviously because I haven’t watched film but I think we kind of just let up. As a defense, I think we could have applied more pressure and played a little harder. By the time that we started playing harder, it was almost too late.”
ON FATIGUE HAVING A FACTOR–“For me personally, I know I am tired but we all have to push through it. We are all going to get tired and we all have to go through long drives. We push through it and we play as hard as we can. When it came down to it in overtime, I was gassed but I am not going to come out. I am going to play as hard as I can.”
ON THE CHANGE AT QUARTERBACK FOR OSU BEING EFFECTIVE–“That is definitely fair to say because I know I was getting back there a couple of times and all he did was step up in the pocket. I feel he knew how to work the pocket a little better than the other quarterback (Jack Colletto).”
ON HOW TO ENOCURAGE THE TEAM TO RESPOND TO THIS LOSS–“There is not much I can really say to them but it starts with practice. We will come in on Sunday because we have a Friday game so we are going to start earlier on in the week. It comes down to playing physical and being ready. I think we took them for granted knowing their record. It came to bite us in the butt. It starts on Sunday and it will go throughout the whole week."

RB Jermar Jefferson
ON HOW THE COMEBACK VICTORY FEELS-“It feels great. We came in at halftime and coach told us just to keep pushing it and that’s what we did.”
ON HOW THEY KEPT THEIR COMPOSURE-“I knew we had to keep our energy on the sideline and keep the team pumped up and ready to go.”
ON THE MOOD IN THE LOCKER ROOM-“It was a great experience, something I’ve never experienced before.”
ON WHO HE GREETED AFTER THE GAME –“I was clapping hands but the first person I hugged was my mom, I love my mom, she does everything for me.”
ON HAVING JAKE LUTON IN THE GAME-“It’s a great difference. He knows what he’s doing and he’s a field controller.”
QB Jake Luton
ON HOW HE FELT NOT STARTING-“I was just on call, I was ready and I knew that I could potentially get my number called. I’ve been out for a little while and Jack’s (Colletto) been doing a great job in practice, getting a lot of reps, and so they felt comfortable having him go and I think he did a good job and I was able to provide a spark for the team.”
ON WHAT THE SIDELINE WAS LIKE DURING THE COMEBACK-“It was a pretty amazing feeling. The guys never got down, even in the first half there at the end when we were down quite a bit, the vibe was never down. We came out in the second half ready to keep swinging and fighting and we did just that.”
ON HOW HE FELT ABOUT THE CROWD-“To be out here in Colorado and have the support that we did from Beaver Nation is amazing. My grandparents came out here so I got to give them a hug and it was an amazing feeling.”
ON WHAT COACH SMITH TOLD HIM DURING THE GAME-“Throughout the day he told me to just keep battling and to step up and that this was my time to come out here and really let things shine and at the end he told me he was proud of me and like I said it’s just a great feeling.”
ON HOW HE FELT ONCE HE KNEW THEY HAD WON-“It’s amazing. This feeling I’m feeling right now is something like never before and it’s amazing to take the road that I’ve taken and be able to come here and still play with this team that I love playing with, they battled so hard today and it’s an amazing feeling.”
ON HIM AND JACK COLLETTO BOTH CONTRIBUTING-“I think Jack did a great job. I love him getting in there and pounding the rock on the goal line. I think I might be more excited for him than he is for himself, I love it and he did a great job today and I think us switching back and forth provided a spark for the team.”
ON THEIR REMAINING SCHEDULE BEING TOUGH-“Our schedule was tough today too, Colorado is a really good team and we knew that coming in, and if we can just keep this rolling and building in the right direction anything can happen in the Pac-12.”
SS Jalen Moore
ON HOW HE FELT ABOUT THE VICTORY-“I just want to thank my team and my coaches for fighting and never giving up. That’s the motto, never give up, keep fighting, the score didn’t represent that in the first half but that’s what happens when you keep fighting and keep going with your teammates and trust the process.”
ON FIRST HALF PERFORMANCE-“I feel like as a team we are making steps, starting fast, that’s something we’ve emphasized all year and I feel like we did that in the game today.”
