Colorado-Arizona State Notes
vs
California Baptist
Dec 1 (Mon)
7 p.m.
Colorado’s 97 points in the first round win over Arizona State was the most in its postseason conference tournament history. It was also the most in any postseason game for the Buffaloes since defeating Massachusetts 98-91 in the third place game of the 1991 NIT in New York City.
Colorado had 13 3-point field goals and its most efficient performance of the season hitting 61.9 percent from downtown (13 of 21). The Buffaloes hit double digits in 3-pointers for the ninth time this season and third time in the last four games.
Colorado’s 13 3-pointers was its most away from Boulder since knocking down 13 at Missouri on Jan. 14, 2006. It was the most in a conference tournament since recording 14 vs. Texas in the quarterfinals of the 1999 Big 12 Tournament.
The 26 combined 3-pointers from Colorado and Arizona State tied a Pac-12 Tournament record (Stanford 15, ASU 11, 2012).
Colorado’s 3-point percentage was its best since hitting the exact same figure against Sacramento State in the 2016-17 opener. It was the best mark away from Boulder since hitting 6 of 9 (.667) vs. Kansas State in the 2011 Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals.
Colorado was 18 of 20 from the free throw line with all 20 attempts coming in the second half. At one point the Buffaloes hit 14 straight.
Colorado shot 53.2 percent overall, improving to 8-1 this season when shooting over 50 percent. The Buffaloes are 60-3 in the Tad Boyle era when shooting above 50 percent.
McKinley Wright IV (20 points, 11 assists, 8 rebounds) recorded his fourth double-double and third of the points-assists variety. He ties a school season record with his third points-assists double-double joining Jay Humphries, who did it in 1982-83 and 1983-84, and Tony Ellis (1976-77). Humphries holds the career record with six.
He matched his career-high with 11 assists. The 11 assists are the most by a Buffalo in a postseason conference tournament and ties for the most in a postseason overall. Jose Winston had 11 against Southern Illinois in the 2000 NIT.
With 170 assists, Wright has tied Billy Law (1990-91) for fourth most in one season by a Buffalo.
After his 20-point performance vs. Arizona State, Wright has scored 446 points, the fourth most by a freshman in team history. His 14.4 average would rank sixth among freshmen in one season. Wright, who leads the Buffaloes in scoring, would be just the seventh to achieve that feat since freshmen became eligible in 1972. He is on pace to become the 14th freshman since 1972 to average at least 10.0 points per game.
Points in a Freshman Season:
1. Alec Burks (2009-10) 512
2. Richard Roby (2004-05) 480
3. Chauncey Billups (1995-96) 465
4. McKinley Wright IV (2017-18) 446
5. Donnie Boyce (1991-92) 417
Wright’s eight rebounds are his most against a Pac-12 opponent, and most since pulling down nine against South Dakota State on Dec. 15.
Tyler Bey (14 points, 10 rebounds) the Las Vegas native records his second career double-double, matching his career-high in scoring (vs. Washington, at Oregon State). He’s recorded at least one block in each of the last five games, averaging 1.8 during that span.
Lucas Siewert (12 points, 4 rebounds, 4-6 FG) logs his fourth straight game scoring in double figures, averaging 13.5 points during that span. He has 11 career double-figure scoring games, with seven coming in the last 10 games.
Siewert has made 7 of his last 10 3-pointers (.700) and 18 of his last 32 from the field overall (.563).
D’Shawn Schwartz (10 points, 4 rebounds, 4-7 FG) matched his career high in points, the other coming against Arizona at home on Jan. 6. He set personal bests in both field goals made and attempted.
Dominique Collier (17 points, 3-4 3FG, 8-10 FT) scored in double figures for the ninth time this season and records his second-best total of the campaign. It was a career-afternoon from the line, logging personal bests in both free throws made and attempted.
