Colorado Head Coach Mike MacIntyre
Opening statement“First of all, New Hampshire played incredibly hard. What a gorgeous day in Colorado today. It was extremely hot out there. I thought our team came out and played hard and physical. We had a couple of mistakes that made the game last a little longer than it should have but I was very pleased with our state of mind and our aggressiveness in the game.”
On avoiding a letdown
“If you noticed what they were doing offensively, they were holding it and trying to snap the ball with two second left, and just really tried to milk (the clock.) We should have been up 35-0 at halftime, at least 31-0. I thought were playing physical and doing some good things. They wanted to slow it down and make it one of those types of games. I thought overall were a physical football team, which is what I wanted to see. Usually when there’s a letdown it’s because you’re not being physical and get lackadaisical. I don’t think that happened today.”
On WR Laviska Shenault, Jr.
“After last week he had a little bit of an A.C. sprain so we wanted to make sure to play him but we didn’t want him to get hit a ton if we could help it. We played him in the first half, then at halftime we talked about it and decided to shut him down. That’s what we did. He’ll be fine, he’s just a little sore. I wanted to make sure he knew how much we care about him and how much we’re going to use him. He did some really good things during the game.”
On offensive line roatation
“We’re still looking (for our best combination of five guys), but we feel like we have some guys that can play. OL Brett Tonz tried to do it all week, but he tweaked his ankle again a little bit on Thursday. He wasn’t able to go full speed so we started OL Jake Moretti at guard and I thought Jake played well. We got Kary Kutsch in there too. Played OL Will Sherman at left tackle and I thought he did well. Played OL Josh Kaiser and OL Aaron (Haigler) at tackle as well. We just have to keep moving and keep working with them.”
On fighting complacency after 3-0 start
“I don’t think they’ll get complacent. We’re going to go back down the hill (for practice). I know that (beat writers) Adam (Munsterteiger) and Brian Howell love walking up and down that hill, so we’re going to go back down the hill, they have to park their cars up here (at the Champions Center) and walk up and down the hill. We’ll go down there and practice next week. We’ll lift Tuesday and give them Monday off and get back a preseason mentality. We finished our preseason now it’s time for the Pac-12 season so we’re going to go down there and have three aggressive practice and prepare for UCLA after that.”
On getting backups reps
“It means a lot (to those players and to us coaches). Getting guys out there for the first time, they see the good things they do, they see the bad things they do so you can correct them and coach them. They know what they need to improve on. It gives them a feel for what it’s like, so I think it’s invaluable.”
On Pac-12 South landscape
“I really don’t know yet. We’ve all played different games and different situations. Teams get better as the season goes along. You have injuries and stuff happen sometimes. I think the whole Pac-12 is completely wide open. We’ll get into Pac-12 play and see how it comes out.”
On his favorite thing about this year’s team
“I like the resiliency of our football team. I like our fight and our effort. I like our closeness. I like our mental toughness. I like our physical toughness. We’re going to get punched some but we’re going to get back up and punch back. You can’t count these guys out ever. I’ve seen it in games. I’ve seen it in practice. I’ve seen the way our guys lift each other up off the field. They’re a very together group and I think they’re extremely mentally tough. We’re going to have some great days. Hopefully we don’t have any bad days, but we might. But we’re going to have a lot of great days because these kids never quit.”
On TB Travon McMillian
“He played really well against CSU and had a couple good runs last week against Nebraska. He’s a really good football player that the team has gotten to know and like. He’s very humble and is a team player. He’s going to have a few more big games for us this year, and he’s going to need to for us to be successful.”
On OLB Davion Taylor
“He’s gotten better each and every week. Football is still a little bit new to him. He has that explosive athleticism. He’s going to make a lot more plays. He caused a big fumble last week. I’m excited about Davion and the ways he’s improving.”
On QB Steven Montez
“He’s played really well. He’s been really sharp. He’s done some really good things. I think he is a heck of a football player. He’s going to need to play well for us to be successful. I definitely believe he will.”
On establishing the run
“It just depends on what the teams do; whatever way we need to win the football game. I always correlate to basketball. If you play a basketball team that is overplaying the three-pointer, you have to get inside, you have to set picks. If they are backing off of you, you have to hit the three pointer. Every team is going to play us differently. We have to figure out how they are playing us, how they are doing it. Steven can adapt and do a lot of different things. If they are going to play more coverage, we are going to need to be able to run it. If they get aggressive with us, we are going to have to make some big plays in the passing game. He can see it now, he can understand it now. He knows what is going on. Week to week, it is going to be different. We just need to find a way to win that Saturday, win that game. That is just the way it is in college football now.”
On facing UCLA Head Coach Chip Kelly
“I have never been opposite of Chip Kelly – no I haven’t. Today was his main mentor I went opposite of. Last week was one of his pupils he’s studied under. So we have been against two of them. Now we will go against the real McCoy when we play them here in two weeks on a Friday night. It is going to be fun.”
On PK James Stefanou
“We kicked him for the first time a little bit on Thursday. He felt okay. So we went into warmups. He came to me in warmups and said he felt good. So we went with him and he was ready to go. We had to have him ready to roll. James felt good. I watched him, he came straight through and he didn’t cross over. All of that was good. The good thing is, we have a couple of weeks here to truly get him well and roll for Pac-12 play. We had to push PK Evan (Price) and P Davis Price this week hard. They got a lot of preps. We put pressure on them in game situation type things in practice. All of that to me is a positive for the future.”
New Hampshire Head Coach Sean McDonnell
On His Team’s Performance“They played hard today. We did some of the things that we have been doing all season; some turnovers, some screwy plays, some missed tackles that hurt us. You just can’t do that. A big turnover made (CU’s score) 21 to 28; we had a stop at the end of the first half and you come into the locker room feeling good and then bang, first play is a 75-yard run. Disappointing, the guy is reaching while trying to tackle but we played hard and kept it a little closer at the end there. You know when you come into these games, we have been playing them for almost 18 years, you can’t make a lot of mistakes and we did that. You can’t miss a lot of tackles and we did that. You also have to make some plays on special teams and none of us did. Disappointing but there is light at the end of the tunnel, there were some things that we have been getting better at that may help us further down the line. We have an off week to get better and that is what we are going to do in New Hampshire.”
On QB Christian Lupoli’s Performance
“One of the things that we look for in a quarterback is toughness, and Christian is a tough kid. The thing that I saw was him stepping up, his scrambles were with a purpose this week. He got some balls off and got licked but got back up. That is a credit to him. We have to figure out how to keep from doing that, you know both as an offensive scheme and everything else but at the same time that is what we expect of him and he did it.”
On The Impact Of Colorado’s Linebackers
“Their two inside linebackers, Landman and Gamboa, those guys are downhill physical football players. Watch the Nebraska game, they were doing that, so we knew that they were going to do something we just didn’t execute what we needed to do to slow it down, a big physical guy is knocking you over.”
On Their Defense
“We scored on defense, it was a hell of a play by Pop (Smith). We created a turnover late, a nice play by Evan Horn. The disappointing thing is that we didn’t tackle. If we would have tackled, like we had tackled in the Colgate game, I think that we would have felt better about it. But with that being said, a little bit of a different cat we were chasing this weekend. “
On How His Team Dealt With The Heat and Altitude
“You know I didn’t see anyone cramping up. We made some mistakes with substituting, we got caught a couple of times with 11 or 12 men on the field. I thought our guys handled it pretty well to be honest with you.”

TB Beau Bisharat
ON HIS INCREASED PLAYING TIME- “It felt great. I wish I could have scored on that long one; get my feet up at the end there. I feel comfortable and I felt good.”
ON HOW THE TEAM MAINTAINED FOCUS THIS WEEK- “We knew they were going to come in hot and had a chance to beat us so you know, we came out just like we would any other game. All week we prepared like it was any other game so it wasn’t any different for us.”
ON THE CONFIDENCE THIS TEAM BRINGS- “I think it’s just that we have a pretty tight group of brothers in there. And you know, just coming out every week and working, working, working all week you know? It just brings everybody together and we show up on Saturdays ready. I think that’s a little bit different than last year, last year we expected to come in and just beat these type of teams but this year we come out with a different mentality.”
ON HOW THE INTENSITY CHANGES AFTER A BYE- “We just talked about it, we’re done with preseason now. So you know this is what really counts and we want to go nine straight and we want to play for a Pac-12 championship but we’re taking it one week at a time right now. So we’re up for UCLA, we’re going to prepare the whole week and next week and after that we’ll go to the next, on to the next, on to the next.”

WR Tony Brown
ON THE TEMPERATURE AFFECTING PLAYERS TODAY- “It was hot. It was definitely hot today but during the week it was just as hot as the game so we had to just fight through it and drink a lot of water, hydrate and just get through it.”
ON HOW THE TEAM HANDLED THEIR BUSINESS TODAY- “We just did our thing. It’s another game you know? We can’t play down to other team’s levels so we just continue to move on and work hard.”
ON HOW THINGS WENT OFFENSIVLEY TODAY- “I think it went really good you know? My connection with (Steven) Montez felt really good and we’ve been practicing all week for it and got our timing down so it felt really good.”
ON THE TIMING OF THE BYE WEEK-“Yes, the timing is good. It gives us time to get ahead of UCLA, time to work on our craft, and time to get better every day.”

RB Travon McMillian
ON HIS PERFORMANCE – “I have been putting in a lot of hard work this offseason to try and have a really consistent year. It is good that I have been consistent this year, but I am going to keep trying to get better throughout practice each and every day. I am going to remain humble and keep working.”
ON LAVISKA SHENAULT – “He made it [his touchdown] look too easy. Everybody on the sidelines was like ‘that was way too easy.’ Viska is obviously really talented. We are going to need him the rest of the season. He is just really explosive and is a dynamic athlete. I am really excited about him.”
ON PLAYING IN THE WILDCAT – “I have done it before. I did it at Virginia Tech as well. So I have some experience doing it. I really like being in the wildcat. I kind of brings me back to the good old days when I played quarterback in high school. I enjoy running the ball out of it because you get that extra blocker. I am just going to keep doing my thing as long as I can. Hopefully, those guys upfront can give me that crease—they have been doing an excellent job of doing that.”
ON WHAT NEEDS TO GET DONE IN THE BYE WEEK – “We want to get everybody’s bodies feeling well again. We need to focus on the small things, making sure that we are honing in on the details. That way when we get to those big-time games we can execute at our potential.”

DE Mustafa Johnson
ON THE TEAM’S 3-0 START- “Being 3-0, that’s amazing. There’s a statistic that if you go 4-0 in your first couple games, you’re more than likely to have a winning season and that’s what our coach talked about. We strive for that as a defensive line unit and as a defense in general, as a team in general. We know that statistics are facts but don’t always come true but we all plan on winning. It’s an amazing feeling, we have this ball rolling downhill and want to keep it going.”
ON WHAT THE TEAM MUST ACCOMPLISH BEFORE NEXT GAME- “Defensively, or actually as a whole team, we want to keep the intensity up. Thirteen days is a lot of time to start slacking off or to lose our focus before our next game so definitely get better during our 13-day break.”

OLB Davion Taylor
ON HOW THE DEFENSE PLAYED-“We started off real good. It was hot. It was intense, but we really did good starting off. After halftime, I felt like we gave up a little bit in somethings, but overall I think we had a great effort.”
ON WHAT THE OFFENSE IS SAYING ABOUT THE TURNOVERS HE’S CREATING-“They really praised me. Every day in practice we do country and city kind of drills, like fumble drills. When it happens, the practice just comes out into the games.”
ON HOW HE WANTS TO IMPROVE GOING INTO THE BYE WEEK-“I think I need to improve my rushing. I am a Pac-12 sprinter in track so I think I should come off a little bit faster and show off that speed to get to the quarterback even faster than I do.”
ON HIS TOUCHDOWN-“When I saw the ball, I didn’t know what to do. I picked it up and I saw the end zone. When I got to the end zone, I didn’t know how to celebrate. It was all just like a dream come true. I had never scored a touchdown before. When it happened, I didn’t even know what to think. I just got on the sidelines and everyone was just happy. I was overjoyed, myself.”
ON DEFENSE HEADING INTO BYE WEEK-“We still have some improvements to do. I feel like we have a great defense. We have a chance to go to the Pac-12 (Championship), and be a good defensive unit.”

QB Steven Montez
ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE RUNNING BACKS – “Travon McMillian is a guy that stands off the page, 162 yards and two touchdowns. We expected that from him coming from Virginia Tech. We knew he was a good athlete and knew he was a good back. Today he showed how talented he his. Obviously, [TB] Kyle Evans as well got a touchdown. He’s a great back as well. I think we have depth all over the field.”
ON HOW HE WOULD EVALUATE HIMSELF UP TO THIS POINT OF THE SEASON – “I would give myself a B-, maybe a C+. I don’t know. It needs to get better. We still have a lot of things to improve on. I think going into this bye week, we are going to fi a lot of things that we have messed up on in the past. We will come out better for it.”
ON RETURNING TO RETURNING TO THE LOWER PRACTICE FIELDS FOR THE UPCOMING BYE WEEK – “I am excited for it. Whenever you are thinking about walking down that hill, you have to be thinking about a Pac-12 Championship. The thing that reoccurs is my mind is 2016, us against Washington. I can’t get it out of my mind. I am excited to go down that hill and get back to work. We are not nearly as close to what we need to be. We could be a lot better as a team. I think we need to keep working and stay hungry.”
ON MCMILLIAN’S TOUCHDOWN RUN-“My hands kind of got really tired, they cramped up a little bit after I handed the ball of to Travon and he went down the sideline. I’m just playing man, that was a great play by Travon. I mean I didn’t have to do anything on it so I mean it was a really good play from him.”
ON HOW IMPRESSED HE IS BY MCMILLIAN-“When he got here I kind of knew, I was like ‘This guy has something about him, he is something serious.’ He is playing great, I think that Kyle played great today as well. I think that we have some depth in a lot of positions.”
ON OTHER PLAYERS MAKING IT INTO THE ENDZONE-“I wanted Beau to score so bad on that long run. It was a great run either way though, Beau played great I think he had 92 yards on the game. Travon had 162 yards with two touchdowns and Kyle had a touchdown and I’m not sure how many yards. They played a great game, Alex Fontenot got a touchdown too. Like I said we have some depth, not just at the receiving position but at the running back position as well.”
ON PLAYING IN AN EXPECTED WIN GAME-“Sometimes the expected games are the most difficult to win because you worry about guys not being focused, not truly buying into the game, or just getting distracted during the game. So I thought that we handled it well, I thought that we played well but had a few mistakes. We will come back and correct them and we will be better for it.”
ON WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE SHENAULT-“He is one of those guys who even if he is covered you still have to give a shot because he is such a great player and an athlete. I think that he is going to make a lot of those plays at his time here at CU. It is going to be really good for the offense.”
ON THE TIMING OF THE BYE WEEK-“I think this is a perfect time for a bye, it gives us time to get locked in and get ready for Pac-12 play. We’re going to go back down to the fall camp field down the hill. We’re going down the hill to practice this Wednesday, Thursday, Friday so it will take us right back to fall camp, get us locked in for the start of Pac-12 play so I think it’s great, I think it’s very good for us.”
ON THIS YEAR’S 3-0 START FEELING BETTER- “I mean it kind of feels the same right now because I think everybody knows what happened last year in Pac-12 play, we kind of folded a little bit so I think we come into Pac-12 play and UCLA really hungry and kind of with a chip on our shoulder playing real physical. So I think we’ll do that and I think we’ll play well.

WR Laviska Shenault, Jr.
ON THE FEELING OF THIS WIN- “It felt good, there’s just a lot of stuff going on so you know. I’m just keeping my head up and playing hard every day.”
ON HIS DEVELOPMENT SINCE JOINING COLORADO- “Yeah I started in ninth grade peewee, then JV but trust the process, keep working and was really looking at the players before me like on the older teams. So like I said, trust the process, keep working and it turned out good so far.”
ON IF HE WAS EXPECTING THIS MUCH SUCCESS- “I envisioned me playing well but playing this well I had no idea.”
ON THE STATUS OF HIS SHOULDER- “It’s good, it’s just sore.”
ON THE TEAM BEING WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE – “Yeah this is exactly where we need to be but you have to keep working, you can’t stay at that level, you have to keep rising every week.”

ILB Nate Landman
ON THE TEAM’S 3-0 START- “Oh definitely, I think this year we’re really playing together more, last year we were still a team, still a great team but we didn’t have that brotherhood that we have this year. We’re all out there making plays, if someone makes a mistake, it’s on to the next, no one is getting down on each other and I think that’s a key role for a team to be great and be a championship team. Everyone feels comfortable in their roles and for people to step up and make plays.”
ON THE TIMING OF THE BYE WEEK – “Yeah for me the bye week doesn’t really matter but I think having three pretty tough games, having an emotional win last week, some dudes are definitely banged up and it’s great to have that time to relax and get some things sorted out. We also have a week off before Pac-12 play, UCLA is a great team, and having that little bit of extra time will definitely help.

New Hampshire Players
QB Christian Lupoli
ON COLORADO-“Colorado’s a great team offensively and defensively. They’re 3-0 in the Pac-12. They have players out there, their D-line is big, they’re explosive. Their linebackers Landman and Gamboa, they’re great football players and when they’re coming downhill they’re coming with bad intentions.”
ON SECOND CAREER START-“Even last week I didn’t have that many nerves. I said last week that I came here to play quarterback, I came here to start games, I came here to help this team win in any way that I can. I came here to play football so I can’t have too many nerves”

FS Pop Lacey
ON STAYING FOCUSED-“Honestly we just wanted to play hard. We knew we played hard last week against Colgate and we wanted to do that again. We have outstanding linebackers and an outstanding defensive line. Quinlen Dean and Jared Kuehl both played very well and we tried to play off of them and come in with the mindset that they are just like us, no matter what conference they play in.”
ON INTERCEPTION-“I saw the ball and just tried to break on it. It was the only ball that came my way and I didn’t want them to be one for one on me.”
ON ALTITUDE AND HEAT-“The altitude was a little different. We came out here yesterday and were able to try to get adjusted, just making sure we stay hydrated and our staff did a great job of getting us prepared and keeping us hydrated.”
ON WHAT HE LEARNED FROM GAME-“Just the ability to know that we can play with anybody. From a defensive standpoint I thought we did a lot of good things but I also thought we did a lot of bad things. We let up a couple big plays that we shouldn’t have and we’ll correct that hopefully tomorrow. We just wanted to come and play hard, that’s our motto. They’re men just like we’re men, they put their pads on just like we do.”
ON COLORADO’S ADJUSTMENTS-“I felt like they made some changes and started running the ball more. They were able to spread us out when they were trying to get to the outside and we just weren’t really prepared for the inside run.”
