Colorado-Loyola Marymount Quotes

Colorado Head Coach Tad Boyle
General“Let me first start by tipping my cap to Loyola Marymount. They came in here and played a heck of a game. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy and it wasn’t. Sometimes you expect so much of yourself and your team that you forget that they have good players too. Eli Scott, what a terrific basketball player. We knew that coming into the game watching film. I mentioned to (LMU Head Coach Mike Dunlap) before the game, that kid can play. He proved it tonight. That is what good players do. They come into opposing buildings and step up. That kid did. Number one, we have to tip our cap to them. Number 2, we make it really hard on ourselves. We have to make the game simpler and easier. The way you do that is by making simple and easy plays. Some of our guys aren’t doing that. You don’t make simple plays and turn it over 18 or 19 times like the last two games. We have to get better. There were some really good things in the second half, in terms of offense. I thought we had some really good possessions. Shooters have to make shots. D’Shawn (Schwartz) made some big threes. Shane (Gatling) made I know one. Lucas (Siewert) made one. We have a good shooting team, better than our field goal percentage shows. We have to take care of the ball. There are a lot of good things. We were down one on the boards at halftime and finish +9 with 15 offensive rebounds. This team figures out a way to win. It starts with McKinley (Wright IV) but doesn’t end with him. We need everyone. I thought Evan (Battey) was really good. We have to keep him out of foul trouble. Part of that is on him not making silly fouls. I love this team. We will talk about Saturday and I’m sure you guys have some questions about that. In terms of Loyola Marymount, we took a good shot form them tonight and we handled it.”
On turnovers
“I thought we did a lot better job in the second half. The first 30 minutes we turned it over 17 times. The last ten minutes, once. We were trying to press, believe it or not, but we are trying to press out of free throws, not out of made baskets. We got into the press one time. We couldn’t make a second free throw. Finally, we said let’s just guard man full and try to wear them down. Free throw shooting comes and goes. At some point consistency has to kick in. It is early. I think this team is still learning. One of the things I talked to our team about is I don’t want anyone feeling sorry for themselves. Right now, we have a ten-man rotation. Some guys aren’t playing as much as they want. I had a quick hook tonight on some guys as a result of no box outs and turning the dang thing over. We have to get rid of those. That was Tyler (Bey) and Lucas. Tyler had a free throw box out on a guard. Lucas had a free throw box out and the guy goes right by him, catches it and lays it in. Daylen (Kountz) is in the press and has one guy on him and throws it right to Loyola. Guess what guys, we can’t do that. I can’t do it after every turnover but free throw box outs? Daylen needs to play better. I thought he did some really good things in the second half. Those turnovers, we have to get rid of that. He has to understand that, and everyone has to understand that. McKinley had three but played 38 minutes. He has the ball in his hands 70% of the time. He is going to have some turnovers. He needs to get better too. He makes plays when he needs to make plays. Tyler had some big blocks. We know what they are capable of. We have to play more to the level of our capability. The one thing about this team is we are capable. We have good players. I love every one of them, I really do. I am not going to put up with bad body language and feeling sorry for yourself. It is about winning basketball games and what can you do to help this team get that done.”
On getting opponents’ best shot
“I hope so. We said the same thing after Irvine, Sac State and tonight. I promise you in Allen Fieldhouse we are going to get their best shot. Check their record there. It is pretty darn good.”
On Kansas
“I follow their scores. As a college basketball coach, you don’t get a chance to sit down and watch full games often. I know they have good players. (Kansas Head Coach) Bill Self is a Hall of Fame coach. The one thing I know about KU is they are pretty darn good every night. They are not perfect. They can be beat. To go into Allen Fieldhouse and win you better take care of the ball, control tempo, guard, and not let them get on their runs. That crowd is unlike anything any of our players have seen yet. We are not going to be afraid. We respect everybody and fear nobody. We better be ready to handle the ball better than we have the last two games.”
On Daylen Kountz
“Bringing him off the bench gives him a little less pressure. I don’t want to play McKinley 38 minutes. I’d like to play him 32. We need that guy on the floor when the game is tight. Eli (Parquet) gives us an extra defender. Daylen is really good in transition. At the end of the shot clock he made some really good plays at the rim and got to the foul line. In the open floor Daylen is really good. That is what our players have to start recognizing about their teammates. How do we get Daylen in transition? How do we get Lucas, Maddox (Daniels), Shane, D’Shawn going? Those are all things I think our players have to think about. How do we get Evan post touches? He is a load down there. We have to start think of each other. Right now, we are thinking about ourselves a little too much.
On preparing for Kansas
“I have not looked at one clip of Kansas tape so I can’t answer your question. I know Devon Dotson is on everyone’s All-American lists and Wooden Award lists. I know he is a hell of a player. I know that (Udoka) Azubuike kid is a good player. They have good players, I know that. I can’t speak to their personnel because I haven’t watched. 24 hours from now I might have an answer.”
On D’Shawn Schwartz
“I think McKinley did a great job tonight of finding him (Schwartz). When D’Shawn is open we want him to shoot it. His teammates want him to shoot it. His coaches want him to shoot it. Shooters make shots. D’Shawn did that tonight. 4/7 from three that is what three-point shooters are supposed to do. You have shot makers and shot takers. Tonight, D’Shawn was a shot maker. We need more of those guys.”
On the defense
“They had 46 points in the paint. They were driving us. We have to guard the ball better. 52% in our building should never happen. Coming into this game, Loyola was 13th in the country in field goal percentage offense. We were 270th. I don’t know where we are tonight, but I am not sure we moved up shooting 41%. Loyola has some good players. They have a lot of young players. They are going to be good as they grow and develop.”
On Dallas Walton
“I thought Dallas’ minutes tonight were good. What I would like to see is that same level of frustration on our players faces when they make silly fouls or are out there guarding a guy 40 feet from the basket and he goes by them and shoots a layup. That is what we have to get better at. Dallas missing bunnies, I don’t worry about that. All players don’t want to do that. I understand his frustration, but I want to see it when he doesn’t show on a ball screen or doesn’t do something he is supposed to do. There are so many ways Dallas Walton, Tyler Bey, Evan Battey, and Lucas Siewert can help our team win that does not involve scoring the basketball. They have to understand that and play like that. That is true for our perimeter guys as well. That is what we have to do to get better. We all are worried about our shots and missed bunnies. That is going to happen. I could care less about it. I don’t want him to miss them, but he came out and I said, ‘Don’t worry about that.” Worry about the things that matter.
On Saturday’s matchup against Kansas
“We have an opportunity on Saturday to go into a special place in college basketball history and make a little history of our own. It isn’t going to be easy and we aren’t going to do it by turning the ball over and getting sped up. We are going to do it by executing, competing, and doing the things we are capable of doing. All you can ask for in life is an opportunity. Our guys have it. We have it. Let’s go try to make the most of it.”
Colorado Players
McKinley Wright IV, Jr., GOn What Gave The Team Trouble Tonight
“It’s not anything that they did. We just have to get back to ourselves. Our offense obviously isn't clicking, as well as it was earlier in the season, but it's something that'll change. You know, we aren't too stressed about it right now because we're really good on the defensive end, rebounding the ball, it’ll come though, it’ll come, we just got to stay patient, keep hanging our hats on defense and rebounding but the offense will come.”
On The High Amount Of Turnovers For The Team Lately
“They didn't force us into turnovers, we did it upon ourselves. Brought it upon ourselves on the one-hand catches, the one-hand passes, not coming to a two-foot jump stops. Just making the wrong reads and we know that we've got to cut those down for Saturday, and I think we're capable of doing - I mean, we can do that. We've done it before we've shown it before. We're excited though.”
On If There Were Any Positives To Take From This Game
“Of course. A win is a win. 7-0, one of the only undefeated teams in the country, and we're excited about that. Regardless of how we played tonight we got the win. And I'm confident in my guys and I know they’re confident in me and we're only going to get better. It's early in the season right now, we’re seven games in. Guys are still getting this feel. We have to get some guys confidence back up and we'll be good. It's a long season. We have plenty of games down the stretch.”
On What Coach Said To The Team At Halftime
“It wasn't necessarily coach, he told us the things that we had to fix, the little things, and it was really D’Shawn. In one of those huddles to start the second half, he kind of looked at me and said we aren’t losing this game. When you get something like that, we bought into getting stops down the stretch and we get stops and get on transition, you know we're hard to stop. It was really on us the players, we just had to buckle down and get stops.”
On Opponent’s Giving It There All Against Them
“Yeah, it doesn’t matter who it is, it’s something we know now. I told you guys this in an interview the other day. Now we've been in this position before, we played against ranked teams and we want to give them our best shot. We beat two of them here, back-to-back on the same weekend, my freshman year. So we know when it feels like to be in both positions now. You have to keep going out there and handle the business.”
On If There Is Any Nervousness For Playing At Kansas On Saturday
“No. Kansas puts five players on the floor, we put five players on the floor, it's time to go to war. It's going to be a battle man. We're not just going to go in there and roll over, because it’s at Allen Fieldhouse, they’re number two in the country. This is a great opportunity for us to go make a name for ourselves. So we’re going to go in there with all the confidence and act like our offense isn’t a problem at all. We’re going to go in there and just play ball.”
D’Shawn Schwartz, Jr., F
On His Go-Ahead Shot In The Second Half
“Honestly we’re not up at 6:45 shooting for no reason. When you pass to each other, I know how he passes, he knows how I pass. We do this every day so I know when he gives me the ball, he has confidence in me, and likewise with him.”
On If The Offensive Struggles Is A Mentality Issue
“I don’t think it’s a mentality thing. Now we got Tyler and Evan. Get them touches on the block, they draw so much attention. We just have to keep working with those guys, have them slow down and realize that double team is coming, and just make the right reads.”
On If The Team Was Looking Ahead To Saturday At All
“I don’t think so. Coach made that apparent that he didn't want anybody looking forward. He made sure that we were locked in on this game because you knew they were going to give us their best shot. And they're obviously a good team, a great offensive team who is going to test us so we had to be ready.”
On What Their Offense Did To Shoot 51%
“Yeah, they were running a lot of different motion actions. That was kind of occupying the backside and that let them get room. They had a lot of points in the paint. 48 points in the paint that's unacceptable, that's not really what we do so that's something we have to tighten up.”
On When To Shoot The Ball On Offense
“Really just seeing where it feels fit. I think the difference between last game and this game is, I saw a lull in the offense and figured I could try to make some happen, and just get some more shots, and they're feeling good so I just kept getting them up.”
On If He Has Been Feeling Good Shooting
“Yes, a lot of reps and a lot of good reps. I was in the gym last night and I got a new rhythm that was really unconscious and it just felt good so I just told myself if get any open shots I'm going to let them go.”
Loyola Marymount Head Coach Mike Dunlap
On how the team was able to keep Colorado controlled“Tempo, we controlled the crowd with working the ball and not getting too carried away. Our defense led to easy baskets in the first and second half at times, we got deflections which gave us some easy baskets and that kind of kept the crowd out of it.”
On limiting Tyler Bey
“We knew we had to keep him off the glass because he is a second shot guy. And then we had to make sure he couldn’t put it on the floor a whole lot so we doubled him quite a bit.”
On what he thought the turning point in the game was
“Missed free throws, they were really deflating and we were seven of seventeen from the free throw line; and we missed a couple of those on the front end, one on one. But in a game like that it obviously wasn’t a spread, we did some fouling at the end but it was a one, two possession game.”
On how he feels coming back to Colorado
“There isn’t a day that I don’t miss it, and there isn’t a day that I don’t love coming back here.”
On any positive takeaways from a tough loss on the road
“That we can play against a power five team and we have the talent to do that. We also know factually that we have done it harder than anybody in the country, we are missing three starters that are out for the year. So with all that youth that is out there, they are very gritty, and the prospects of just getting better and understanding how to win — we are learning that. Those are all encouraging.”
Eli Scott, Jr., G
On how they were able to disrupt Colorado
“Just play hard, that’s really the thing. When it comes to playing a team like that they expect you to just bow down to them in the first five minutes, get a couple dunks and the game is over. We just tried to play hard.”
On setting a career high in scoring and scoring almost half his team’s points
“I was just playing out there. I did that in high school but not in college."
