The mission of the
Smart Materials and Biomechanics (SMAB) Lab is to perform fundamental and translational research at the interface of mechanical engineering, materials science, and biomedical technology. Research projects include developing finite-element models from patient specific data, determining the mechanical effects of exercise and pharmaceuticals on bone, the synthesis and characterization of shape-changing polymers, and the design and testing of biomedical devices.  Dr. Yakacki, in collaboration with CU Boulder, has been funded from the Pac-12 to focus on football helmet design with a focus on lowering the severity of impacts and reducing the prevalence of concussions in the sport.
