Colorado Head Coach Karl Dorrell
On Defending Arizona Air Attack
“That was a very challenging offense and that. We didn't slow him down at all. He had a lot of yards, he six touchdown passes. We struggled on that side of the ball, you know, we did. We struggled with whatever; it could be runs or passes. So we just have a tremendous amount of work. We're working hard, in practice, we're working hard and we're trying to improve the fundamentals and things that we do. It's just not showing up fast enough when we play. That's the unfortunate thing.”On If There’s Hope This Season
“There’s always hope I mean, I'm always gonna have hope, you know, that's, our players need hope to coaches need hope. We're always going to try to find a way we're gonna. We're gonna continue to try to find the right combinations of things to do with maybe it's changing personnel and changing people in the personnel groupings. We're going to try to do anything and everything to try to improve what we've done is obviously not very good right now.”
On What Made Arizona So Difficult To Stop
“There was a lot of open players, you know, even if guys were covered pretty well. He made some really tight quarter throws and you know, he made some really good plays”
On How Difficult The Last Five Weeks Have Been
“It’s been challenging; it has been.”
On QB Owen McCown’s Performance
“He did O.K. He's still making some young mistakes. It's unfortunate we got sacked; but it really wasn't any pressure on that last play. Our tackle got beat, he got hit, balls coughed up and they get a turnover there. It was the only turnover of the game. You know, we're playing probably is as clean as we could play offensively. We're not making a lot of production but in terms of not making as many mistakes and turning the ball over and things like that. That's been really good. It just hasn't been prolific.
On Defensive Struggles
“I'm not ever blaming the players. I'm not going to ever do that. It's always on our staff as coaches. And we really have paid a lot of attention, trying to do the right things with our people. It's just been, it hasn't been the right things. You know, we're going to continue to fight to try to find the right way to do this.
On RB Anthony Hankerson
“He's been positive. He's been a positive glimmer, you know, for us offensively. You know, he's a kid that since he's been back from injury, he loves the game. He's a great teammate. His personality and the way he plays it rubs off on you where you want to play you know, for this guy, so he's doing some really positive things.
On Guy Thomas And Caleb Fauria Not Playing
“Guy was in concussion protocol from practice on Tuesday, so that didn't have enough time to clear after that, you know, when you have something in the middle of the week you're not gonna play by Saturday. And then Caleb who was a game time situation here he just came up and he wasn't feeling well. His systems out of balance, so he didn't play.”
On OL Changes
“Trying to find the right combinations. You know, we felt there was some efficiency offensively. I want bigger plays. That's what I want. I want bigger plays. You know, we had a couple plays. And you know, I know the young receiver had a 42 yard, you know, post route today, but we need more of those types of plays. We had we need more, you know, we have to have more chunks and run the ball even a little bit better too. So they were trying to do well I think we only had like 61 plays. How many they have 83 or something. So we love to be on the field a little longer. You know, like to be able to fill a longer and more plays more production.
On Offensive Production
It was balanced; still the production was not quite what I'm expecting it to be. I thought the changes with the guys on the offensive line, I thought they played OK.”
On Concern Of This Being His Last Game
“No, I'm not concerned about that.”
On Next Step For The Program
“Gotta keep gotta keep going. You know, we got to keep finding ways. You know, to get these guys to play better. We're gonna look at anything and everything.”
Colorado Players
OL Casey Roddick
ON FRUSTRATIONS OF NOT BEING IN GAMES- “I mean, we're all frustrated about what the end goal is, but we know we're still right there. I mean, it's defensively we got to tackle better. Offensively, we’ve got to complement the play on defense better. So I think we saw a better offense this game in terms of kind of just trying to stay on with drives but still we have to finish we have to finish better offensively. But it is disappointing at the end of the day, and we know that.”ON THE SEASON START-“I didn't see this coming. We all didn't see this coming. But still you have to grind this out. I mean, at the end of the day what else you're going to do but work? And that's all we can do. That's what we're gonna do going forward.”
ON OL CHANGES-“I mean, I think we got a lot of guys that can play on the O line. I mean, that's one group on this team that I know – I’m not talking about anyone else - but I know I'm in that room, we're gonna find those triple zeros on the offensive line and we know that we know that we got a young quarterback that we got to protect. So it's heightened to another level. And so obviously the the one sack is on us and that not last play. But I know in the offensive line room there's every single player is heightened to another level and so if everybody could take that into consideration that I know we're going to be successful.”
ON QB Owen McCown
“I mean, we expect him to make mistakes. I mean the kid just graduated from high school so I mean from a kid that come in and and play at a heightened level right off the bat that's that's saying something so he's going to be special and I know that and when I told him ‘Look man, you're gonna make mistakes, but we're gonna protect you I'm gonna try to to our best ability to protect you guys.’ So, I mean, we expected it and he’s playing his butt off right now. And so I thank him for that.”
ON PLAY OF FRESHMEN-“I mean, we knew that coming into this year that this freshman class is gonna make some gonna make some some headway. Anthony Hankerson is doing a really good job back there. Van Wells is doing an excellent job. Chase Sowell even; Jordan Tyson. And so I think that that core is going to not only get stronger, but it's great that they're getting the experience now because two three years from now they're going to be some special.”
ON FIGHTING FOR COACHING STAFF-“Absolutely. I mean, at the end of the day, the outside noises outside of us can't You can't handle what anybody says over Twitter or Instagram or stuff like that. I mean, people are gonna say whatever they want, but at the end of the day, it's what's inside of that meeting room at the end of the day, what's inside and the culture that we tried to build inside and we can't you got to silence everything that's happening on the outside because you can't control that. At the end of the day. It's are you going to come in, bring your hardhat and get the work and that's what we need.”
ON KEEPING FAITH DESPITE RESULTS-“Now I mean, this team is built off grit; built off fight. Now I know that things may not go our way. But at the end of the day, we're all gonna come in. You guys have seen practice we're gonna work regardless of what it is. And so that's one thing about this team is that regardless of what it is, we're gonna work.”
ON IF BYE WEEK IS AT A GOOD TIME-“I think, yeah, I think I think guys just need to take a step back and evaluate themselves, like, as we do after every loss, but now to a heightened level. When you understand what we're doing well, accelerate, put the pedal on the floor that what we're doing bad we need to keep going at it and keep working at it. And so I think that from that perspective, having a bye week having a week off we got some guys healthy obviously we got a lot of number of guys out today.”
ON IF HE NEEDS TO STEP BACK-“I'm on the ground, now. I'll wake up tomorrow I'll be in the weight room doing the Versaclimber getting after it. Nothing never happened; nothing changes anything. Your preparation is your day to day life. So for me to step back, especially as a leader that's that's something that I need to do and I need to reevaluate my way and how I'm doing things obviously. So I think that to settle down the work that's not me.”
ON OWEN McCOWN-“He’s poised he's he takes he takes the field with urgency and he also demands that type of urgency out of offense too. So I think he's doing a lot of great things and he's getting after it. And I'm really happy with how he controls himself. Even the game seems to get a little too big. Sometimes he's still mellow. He's still into it. So I'm really happy with how he handles things.”
