Colorado-Tennessee Notes

Colorado wins its first game against Tennessee in five tries. It’s the Buffaloes first win against and SEC opponent since a 91-84 win at Auburn on Nov. 17, 2015. Colorado improves to 71-118 against current SEC schools (includes a 64-105 record against former Big 12 rivals Missouri (55-96) and Texas A&M (9-9).

Colorado’s win over the No. 11/11 ranked Vols is its first against a ranked opponent away from Boulder since the Buffaloes beat No. 13/12 Dayton, in Chicago, on Dec. 21, 2019. It’s the highest ranked team the Buffaloes have defeated away from Boulder since the 92-88 overtime win over No. 6 Missouri in the quarterfinals of the 1990 Big Eight Tournament in Kansas City.

Colorado now has 24 wins over ranked opponents in the Tad Boyle era (since 2010-11), by far the best in team history. With a record of 24-42, Boyle’s teams have accounted for 35 percent of wins over ranked opponents (68) since 1949-50.

Colorado improves to 16-6 in its last 22 neutral site games. The Buffaloes are 34-27 in games away from Boulder since Feb. 2019.

Colorado is 112-35 in regular season nonconference games under Tad Boyle including a 65-18 mark since Nov. 2014.

The Buffaloes improve to 26-3 in the month of November over the last six seasons.

The win has moved Tad Boyle to within five of Sox Walseth for the most in school history. Boyle, in his 13th season is now 256-156. Walseth won 261 games at CU from 1956-76.

Colorado met the program’s “Gold Standard” holding an opponent to 40 percent or less from the field and having a plus-8 rebounding edge. The Buffaloes held Tennessee to 25.4 percent shooting while outrebounding the Vols by nine (47-38). Colorado is now 82-5 in the Boyle era hitting those two numbers.

Tennessee’s 25.4 percent shooting was the lowest by a CU opponent since Utah shot just 22.6 percent against the Buffaloes on Dec. 31, 2011 – the program’s first Pac-12 game.

Starting Firsts: Javon Ruffin and Luke O’Brien made their first career starts. Jalen Gabbidon and Ethan Wright made their first starts for CU.

Individual stuff:
KJ Simpson (23 points, 10 rebounds):  First career double-double registering career-highs in points, rebounds and field goals made (7). He had 15 points, seven rebounds and all seven of his free throws made in the second half.
  • Lineup shakeup de ja vu. Simpson’s performance off the bench was reminiscent of another CU lineup shakeup in 2017 when usual starting point guard McKinley Wright IV came off the bench – the only time in his career - to nearly record a triple-double against South Dakota State (30 points, 11 assists, 9 rebounds)

J’Vonne Hadley – Registered a career-best 10 rebounds (NCAA games) to go along with five points and three blocks. The three blocks are also a personal best. The last time the Buffaloes had two players with double-figure rebounds in the same game was Jabari Walker (16) and Evan Battey (12) vs. Oregon on Mar. 10, 2022.
