Wetmore on Burchill, 'Casey saw some varsity duty last year and has had an uninterrupted year of training since.  He appears to be among the top five or seven and will most likely represent CU late in the season.'

2002:  Mark Wetmore knew that Burchill had trained hard in Boulder prior to his freshman season, but he had no idea how hard until the walk-on finished in the top-20 of the Rocky Mountain Shootout, covering the 8k Buffalo Ranch course in 26:29, in a field that included top-ranked Division II foe Western State.  He went on to finish as CU's No. 7 runner at the Pre-National Invitational.  In his last race of the season, he ran to a  36th-place effort in the Big 12 Championships.

High School: A five-year letterwinner in cross country and four in track, he led the Bears' cross country teams to three straight conference titles and back-to-back California state runner-up finishes in 1999 and ?00.  The latter is both his biggest moment of his prep career, and his biggest nightmare.  Buchanan lost the state meet to second-ranked Long Beach Poly by a single point when Burchill happened to stop his watch at the finish and another racer beat him from behind with a lean.  On the track he was a two-time junior All-American in the 5k and steeplechase and graduated with school records in the 3,000-m (8:36.08) which ranked seventh nationally.

In The Classroom: A 3.90 prep student, Burchill is an open option major at Colorado and is interested in religious studies.

Personal:  Casey Carl Burchill was born in Williston, N.D. on Aug. 8, 1983.  His parents are Carl and Burchill and Brenda Wallender of Clovis, Calif.  His older brother Corey is a 1995 U.S. Naval Academy grad and his younger sister, Amanda, will be a senior at Buchanan and runs track and cross country.
