2019: Ran twice during the season ... placed 20th at the RoadRunner Invitational ... was 74th overall in the open race at pre-nationals.
2018: Had a solid first season racing for the Buffs, starting with a 26th-place finish at the Wyoming Invitational ... one month later at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, he was CU’s No. 6 runner, finishing 188th ... showed improvement two weeks later at pre-nationals, moving up to 130th overall ... at the Pac-12 Championships, he scored for the Buffs as the fifth harrier, finishing 44th ... in his first 10-kilometer cross country race at regionals, he ended up 65th ... finished the season at NCAAs with a 222nd place performance.
2017: Redshirt ... did not compete.
HIGH SCHOOL: Was an outstanding athlete at Middleton High School, helping the cross country team to four consecutive conference championships and four straight trips to the state championship...MHS placed second at state his junior year ... individually he recorded a pair of fifth-place finishes at state as a junior and senior ... also won two straight conference titles those same years after a third-place finish his sophomore season ... during his senior season he ran a school record 15:18.9 at the Verona Invitational...a four-time MVP, he earned four letters as a member of the cross country team, as well as four on the track team ... helped MHS to a runner-up team finish at the state track meet in 2016 ... set the MHS 3,200 record (9:16.12) in 2015 before it was broken in 2016 ... as a senior he placed fifth in the 3,200 and was seventh in the 1,600-meter run at state ... as a junior at state, he was third in the 1,600 (4:13.08) and fourth in the 3,200 (9:12.54); running both events in PR time ... was an eight-time all-conference honoree in track and cross country and was a five-time all-state selection, three for track and two for cross country.

PERSONAL: Gus Walter Newcomb ... born August 24, 1998 in Madison, Wis ... is the son of Brent, who played ice hockey at Gustavus Adolfus College, and Rachel Newcomb of Middleton, Wis ... has two younger sisters, Gretchen and Sadie ... started his athletic career playing hockey, but stopped playing competitively in eighth grade ... enjoys reading and has started competing in triathlons ... was seventh at the USA Triathlon Junior Elite Nationals in 2015 and ’16.
